Engine noise on deceleration

I don't really see how a blowoff would work... don't they just vent to atmosphere at a preset maximum boost value?

like in the post above, they vent to the atmosphere, but they don't vent until the throttle is let off. in gas engines, they work great, because they get an easy vacuum control source in the intake manifold once the throttle is closed. for a diesel, you need to be a little more creative. . the only time i find i am letting off the throttle real quick is when i am shifting. so if you went with a basic clutch actuated switch, it would cure most barking [mine does it from time to time] and it does sound real neat i think [take a listen to a done up mitsu lancer or subaru wrx or other turbo ricers... ]

I too experienced the same "barking" when shifting from 6th to 5th loaded with 18,000 lbs going upgrade. I was very alarmed and had no idea what may have been the cause. With the dealership more than 100 miles away it seemed impossible to get an answer to my mysterious sound. I also found with some trial and error that the noise only happened when letting off the throttle quickly, but with a easy throttle and clutch I could avoid the "barking". So thanks for the forum and the information to help answer my question.

My auto 03 has done this since new and will even do it on light throttle level acceleration from time to time. I've only gotten a blank look when I mention it to dealer service, and they say it can't be reproduced. At least I've got it written up in case the turbo decides to frisbee through the radiator or something!
