Engine noise

I have just over 10K on my 600. Runs smooth and good power. It seems to have gradually gotten noiser with age. When new, it was almost as quiet as a gasser. I notice it most after freeway use. At idle and in neutral, it sounds (I hate to say it) sorta like a 7. 3 psd. When I put it in gear with foot on brake, the best way I can describe the sound is like a loud ping, but only on maybe one cylinder. If I put in in neutral, it is intermitent and much less noticeable.



Like I said, runs fine. Mileage is typical for a 600. I am watching oil level in case it a leaking injector.

This could be the dreaded 3rd gen knock. Do a search on "knock" in the 3rd gen forums and you'll get several good threads.



I noticed my engine was extrememly loud when I first bought it - to the point it actually hurt my ears on the highway (I have sensitive hearing anyway). It is about 80% quieter now. But it's funny, some times it's louder than at others for no apparent reason. Could be slight variations in fuel quality or some atmospheric conditions. I just drive it and enjoy the music that engine makes!

Yup, mine too, I thought maybe I had been reading too much on here bout the noisy injectors on the 600 and was imagining it but I was at the dealer the other day and listened to a new one run and there is a definate difference. Mine runs fine except for poor fuel mileage, guess I'lll wait and see what happens. Could be normal for these to pick up a little noise with age, I have 16000 miles on it now.

Mine was real quiet when new but slowly got so noisey that even my wife noticed it. Took it to dealer week before last and replaced number six injector , now its as quiet as when it was new. No more cackle- clack just off idle... ... ... JIM
