I just bought a new '05 CTD 4x4 2500 6 speed. When I go to start my diesel I hear a strange noise that sounds like a loud gear drive. I turn the truck off and then back on and the noise is gone. This has happened 4x sense I've bought the truck. The service people can't help because it doesn't do it all the time. They don't know what to look for.

Can anyone give me a clue on what this could be? I love my truck and would like to keep it in top running condition.

Is it when the truck is running or just the key to the start position?

My a/c compressor sometimes makes a loud "crack" when I first turn the a/c on, I think it has happened three times since new. It hasn't done it in about a month, 9000 miles on truck.

Thank you for all your replies. The nosie has been very sparatic. It's doesn't happen alot, about 4x now. You here the noise after the truck has been started. The last time it happend I slowly reved the motor and the noise would rise with the RPM of the engine. It wouldn't go away unless the engine was shut off and then started again.

I feel it sounds like the starter not disengaging or the A/C as some of you had mentiond.

Thanks for all your help.

Sounds like the nouse my '99 used to make in the cold weather from the power steering pump problem. Is your power steering fluid the right level?
