engine not heating up

It's not the thermostat, I checked and replaced that, twice, along with flushing the whole system. Two months ago the truck over heated and blew the transmission/radiator heat exchanger. Upon replacing the transmission, the garage recommended that I put in a seperate, smaller radiator just for the transmission. I replaced the old radiator with the stock one. Now I have two, one for the trannie and one for the engine. Anyway, the engine just isn't getting warm at all, nothing like it used to(over-heating aside). I don't have a numerical temp guage so I'm not exactly sure of the temp but the needle barely raises past the "C". Can the extra taking the trannie out of the cooling/heating system make that much of a difference? Should I get a smaller radiator? Is there something else that could be keeping the engine cool?

Welcome to the forums. Hard to tell much about your problem unless we know what the climate is where you are and under what conditions the truck is cold. It's possible that the temp. sending unit or gauge are off since the overheating incident. These engines run extremely cool when not loaded, if you are in a cold climate you may have to have a winter front? Adding the transmission cooler should not have that much effect. Good luck. Thanks for the reply. I'm up in Northern NH, i. e. chilly the last couple months. I've been runing a winter cover that covers about 1/2 of the radiator now. I'll check on the sending unit and guage. I've also been getting an excessive amount of smoke(esp at start-up), loss of power and loss of mpg since the saga started.

It doesn't usually stay cold down here where I live for very long but I have spent some time in Oklahoma in the winter when it was cold and my mileage goes down quiet a bit too. The smoke could be related to the cold temps. I wouldn't give up on the thermostat, I have had four in mine since it was new. Best way ro check one is remove it and put in pan of water on the cook stove with a thermometer, heat the water and see at what temp it it's opening. If you are only doing short trip driving in cold weather it's not going to warm up much. bg

As far as the thermostat, it seems the only one that works right is the genuine Cummins. I just installed a new one and was amazed at how fast the truck warms up & gets heat in the cab.

I called Cummins with this P/N 3802273 and he gave me a new P/N 3802968. Do you recall the P/N of the thermostat you installed Allen? Thanks, Ross

Thats it, the Cummins part computer automatically updates the numbers when needed.
