engine oil capacity

Is there some difference between Third Gen and Second Gen 24V engines?



My 01. 5 owners manual says 11 qts. with filter, and that's exactly what I've been putting in for 230K. Right on the mark on the dip stick.



You Third Gen folks are saying 12 qts. with filter??

Yes, 3rd gen's have a total capacity of 12 qts.



My truck holds about 14 qts with my bypass filter.

A decent running 2006 4x4 auto with 227k. The oil (Rotela) is changed every 5k. Fram filter is put on empty. Fourteen (yes--14) quarts of oil because "that's what it takes to fill it to the full mark. " Just had to replace a leaking valve cover gasket. Owner knows more than all of us combined on most subjects so he sees no need to subscribe to TDR. If I treated mine like that, it would probably puke, aerate, blow it out, or blow it up! What is he hurting, or is the Cummins tuff enough to take that for 700k? Mark

Does your friend check the oil level after waiting for it to get to the pan? Have him check it in the morning after the truck sits all night. Maybe he is causing some harm from all the potential issues already listed (foaming, extra drag, etc) maybe not, though there is no doubt he is throwing money away by needlessly adding 2 extra quarts at every change.

As far as pre-filling the oil filter, both the vehicle manufacturer (Dodge) and the engine manufacturer (Cummins) recommend pre-filling the filter. I guess they don't know what they are talking about

My truck cools down for about an hour and the oil drains for at least 15 minutes before putting the drain plug back in. Three one gallon jugs fills it to the full mark. Guess the dipstick is wrong or the jugs are not really a gallon. I don't worry about it.

I guess I'm living on the edge but after I change my oil, I don't check it. I mean, I drained it all out, put the plug in and there's 3 empty gallon jugs of oil setting there and I'm not standing in a moat of oil. . Where else would it be? :-laf
