I was reading lastnight and saw that Fleetguard changed oil filter part numbers. From LF3552 to LF3894. I had aquired a box of LF3552s. How big of a difference is there between the filters, am I going to do damage if I use the LF3552s?

I would see if you could swap them out for some LF3894's, or mabye find a 12V owner that would be interested in purchasing them. The old filter was known to grenade sometimes in cold weather startups due to the higher oil pressure that the 24 V engines produce. Fleetguard strengthened the filters and thus the 3894. I used the older application for the first 10 or 15K miles with no problems, but swapped out the first opportunity I had, when I found out about this filter issue.

There is tons of confusion about filters as of late. i will try to make things a little more clean, and simple.

LF3349 = standard element, original housing 12V only

LF3552 = microglass element (better) original housing 12V only

LF3959 = standard element, thicker housing and o'ring 12 or 24V

LF3894 = stratopore element, (best) thicker housing and o'ring 12 or 24V

MHO is to just use the LF3894 and take all the guess work out of it. It is the best filter on the market, made by a company that is owned and was established by Cummins itself to insure quality. Fleetguard is the ONLY filter company that is owned by an OEM.

Don't be fooled by the other "will fit" filters out there. In filters it is what is on the inside that counts. Just because it is the same size and spins on the same doesn't meen it IS the "same". A nice paint job and good marketing don't make a better filter.
