comrades! my 2500 with 17k on it is leaking oil. what is behind the aluminum " plate " in photo? i plan on a dealer visit, but wanted to have you all help educate me as to what that part is called before taking truck in. thanks in advance. the only place i can see the leak is through the fender cut out, and it continues down to the oil pan. from up top there is too much in the way to see anything. thanks much! cheers.

It's the oil filter housing and it bolts to the side of the block . From what I remember there is a cooler behind it.

If nothing has changed the oil cooler is part of the assembly and is internal for the coolant to heat/cool the oil

I had to buy a new one for my 04.5 and actually cummins had to make one up as none were in stock . Cooler is separate component.

p - bar

now i am getting nervous. truck was at dealer for 29 days for 3 hydraulic clutch assemblies. national back order. last year...with 6k miles on it. i wonder if i can take this photo to dealer and have them order parts before i drop truck off. i use it a lot, as i am a carpenter. cheers comrade!

Probably a bad gasket or engine that was built on a Monday or the gorilla that installs the oil filter forgot to tighten the Bolts.

It has some oil passages and might do some cooling to ambient air. But it's not the oil coolee

The gasket (actually you get two) is $54 and there is plenty of stock in the country. It looks like it might be a silicone type gasket so I would snug the bolts up before I took it in. There are 14 bolts holding the housing on and they are 18 ft/lb torque.

thank for that info sag2. i will try tomorrow and brakekleen the area and see if it still leaks. taking the truck in is a big deal - i live 45 minutes away and have to bribe a neighbor to give me a return lift back to home. cheers sir!

It's very simple! Contact your Service Guy, tell him you want a specific time for the Mechanic that WILL be working on the truck to look it over.

I did the above with my two leaks, the Mechanic put it on the lift and determined my timing cover to pan gasket needed to be resealed. He said most likely my trans rear seal was leaking but he told me he would get that seal and the front seal of the transfer case and replace BOTH no matter what he would find.

Made an appointment, got NICE loaner car. Very happy with the Service!!!

comrades - took truck in few days ago for 2 recalls and the oil leak.

they say its the oil filter ( dont want to fix the leak in my opinion under warranty )

it is NOT the oil filter

they claimed they cleaned up the oil seepage and sent me n the way.

oil is still everywhere.

i ordered a ultraviolet light dye kit tonight and will provide them with pictures next time i bring the truck in.

f y i they welded my drag link on one of the recalls....not too crazy about that...

see other thread on this forum vo6

cheers comrades!
