Had my first oil change yesterday at 4,000 miles. Gave the Shop the good filter and 3 gallons of Rotella. When I picked up the truck the owner said they used all the oil! Checked the dipstick this morning---obviously overfilled! Do you think it will harm anything to have 12 quarts rather than 11? If so what do you recommend to lose a quart?

I have done it for 5 oil changes so far, no problems. When I worked in a garage , the owner always had us fill all his trucks at least a quart over full on chevy small blocks with no problems.

Mine is two quarts over filled and haven't had a problem yet. I thought they took three and a half like my old 93 but I was wrong. When you get to much in a car it will run rough due to the crank spinning in the oil. I don't know if that would happen in our trucks.

actually overfilling is not good. the crank tends to whip the oil into a foam. Went to a engine dyno class one time, they had a 350 chevy on the dyno. By running it 1 quart low oil temp dropped and hp increased. I always found that interesting. After dynoing lord knows how many motors now, I still find that true. :p :p :p

In my humble opinion, drain out the extra oil. Cummins says on their site it will hold 11 quarts with a filter change. They have a reason for saying this, most likely as stated above: the crank will whip the oil into foam ( very compressable ) . I'm sure that in certain apps the extra quart is no problem but dont take a chance with a mulity thousdand $ engine.

I would loosen that drain bolt and let a little run out. I alway overfill mine a little when I change oil but not quite that much.

The bottom of your main bearing caps are almost level with

the oil pan rail surface, so 1 quart too many will probably cause

contact with crank and connecting rods.

Been there.

Overfilled mine one time, forgot to add the quart in the filter, went about 1 inch over the full mark. I drained mine back out, don't to take a chance on foaming.
