When I puchased my 04 truck in late 03 I was given a coupon book with 14 free oil changes, well i'm almost out and need to know if it's ok to run a synthetic oil like amsoil, or will i do damage

Use delo, search the forums and read all you can and then make your decision. Sythetic in the engine is not worth the money in my opinion. Whatever you do, when making any mods that might effect the engine, take oil samples!!!!!!!!!! They are worth the money. If you develop your own strategy, you can use it for the rest of your life. Find a oil lab that will talk to you in case you have questions. I personaly use a local Catapillar dealer. And watch out when any result tells you not to change the oil and you feel that it should be changed - you have to feel comfortable. I have found that the oil contamination does not change much between 5000 and 10000 miles, so I now change every 10K - only time will tell, but at least I will know.

Good luck!

Here's my thought on syn oil.

Check the use circle and make sure it complies with your engine's requirements... look in the owner's manual.

If the syn oil meets your engine's requirements and weight requirements, fine.

Just change the dang oil according to the schedule in your owner's manual. Oil turns black for a reason: crap is suspended in the oil. And you need to get the oil/crap out of the engine frequently.

IMHO, that makes Syn oils a waste of money. I use Shell Rotella and religiously change the oil by the owner's maintenance guide. My other strong suggestion is to buy Fleetguard filters (off the internet) and never let a Fram or other non-Fleetguard filter on your truck... . air or oil filter. Than, just drive the dang thing for 400. 000 miles... .

My 2 cents... .
