I have a tempeature gauge setup with a sender in the port on top of the oil filter housing. It keeps looseing the signal and will read "LO" for awhile and then it will cycle back up to normal temp, 180-190* and then start back down again. It only does this while running empty. If I have a load on and the temps get hotter, say 210-220 it will keep the reading. Is this a "by-pass"? Does the oil flow at this port stop every now and then? Or do you think it's a sender problem?

George,

I would guess it is the gauge or sender unit. The port you have the sender located in should have oil there at all times when the engine is operating.

sounds to me like corrosion of the connections, mine does exactly the same thing until I clean the top of the sender and put a new connector on the wire. I tried some "bulb grease" and time will tell.
