I was wondering if installing an engine oil temp gauge is worth it. It seems like it would be very beneficial, especially during warm-up.

Any thoughts? Those who have installed one, do you find it was a worth while accessory?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,

I recently installed an oil temp guage (Isspro). I have not towed heavy with it yet. I put the temp sensor in the top of the oil filter housing.

It takes some time for the oil to heat up. Eventually, it is up a little over 200 degrees. I keep forgetting to look at it when I put my foot in the injectors to see what goes on. I usually am trying to watch my EGT's and boost.

When the weather warms and as I gain more experiance, I will post my observations. I also have a guage for the rear but did not hook it up yet. Even though I have read it is not needed, I think I will put a switch on it and check my 5sp temps as well.

Ryan,I originally had an oil temp sender on top of the filter housing switched with a sender on the same gauge as my AT temp. It was boring, got to about 180-200°and stayed there. I tapped a hole in the intake manifold and moved it there, much more interesting. With it I'm able to see how different mods and outside temps effect the intake temp. Great for seeing the differences between % of blocked front, removing the fan and adding a Pyscotty. I like it,it moves.

It pretty much tracks the water temperature gauge plus about 20-degrees. It takes much longer to heat/cool than the water temp. I think that the highest that I have ever seen is about 220. It's not a very "fun" gauge to watch but I think that it does provide valuable info. Use the extra tap on the top of the oil filter flange for your sender.

Additionally, once you've got the gauge, you can use a switch to add other sensors to other locations (i. e. rear end, transmission, etc. )

Glad to see similar results with the filter housing tap utilized. I am wondering, since the oil temp is so slow to come up, should I be holding back on the fancy stuff until it does come up to temp?

My intention with the second guage was only to split the transmission/rear temps. With sensors being relatively inexpensive, that is a good idea to be creative. More tricks!
