Hey,

I installed an engine oil temp gauge a coupla years ago. During highway pulling I used to run around 220-230 degrees F. Lately I have been hovering about 245-250 degrees. I haven't made any changes lately. I am wondering what temps others are seeing & any suggestions as to why my temps are running hotter as of late.

Thanx

Brett

I have been running a Oil Temp Guage for years. Traditionally the oil temp will run 10 to 15 deg F. hotter than your coolant temp. These engine cool the oil temp by a heat exchange with the water at the filter module. So if you are towing in heat, your oil will run hotter. The highest temp that I have seen on my oil is 245 deg F. Normal temp is 195 to 200 for me. 245 was pulling a very long hill called horse ridge in central oregon with a 8% grade in the middle of the summer. Outside temp was 94 deg F. This is one reason why I run synthetic only in my truck. Synthetic oil will stand up alot better to the heat. ;)

I guess I may need to be concerned as it runs at 245 pretty much all the time. The water stays around 190, and has never changed. I only have 70,000 miles on the truck and cannot imagine why the temps would be so high without other signs of heat or failure.

Where is the probe? Mine is in the top of the filter housing. I also see about 10-15* hotter than the water temp, but I've never seen more than 230* for a few minutes. In all our big trucks, the probe is in the pan and they all run about 20* or so less than the water.

Yeah, my probe is in the filter housing. I will check my connections, I may even have another sending unit around. That would be an easy fix if that was all there was to it.

I also run mine off the second port on top of the filter. My 245 deg F. that I have seen was with 23,000 lbs of trailer loaded up and a very long hill. ;) Normal temp is 195 to 200

I'm using a dipstick sensor right now, been there 2 weeks and I'm tired of it already. I broke my dipstick handle messing around with it(Don't ask). any way what size NPT is that on top of the oil filter?
