does any body know who is making the oil for mopar ? is it Rotella or Mobil Delvac? and at what mileage do you reccomend changing to synthetic I have 10,000 miles on the truck and I am wondering if that is to soon Matt 2004. 5 3500 4X4 Silver Dually Laramie :(

Matt, not sure who makes "Mopar" oil, but Cummins have historically arrived with Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40 in the crankcase.

At 10,000 miles it depends on how you've driven the truck. If you've gotten some good towing miles in, go ahead with synthetic. If you've pretty much been empty, I'd wait another oil change. I would suggest Delo 400, Rotella or Premium Blue for your next change before going syn. Those oils are as good or better than the "mopar" stuff and a lot cheaper for sure. As for filters you can't get much better than Fleetguard Stratapore.

I changed to synthetic at 12k with no issues.

If you want to go synthetic go ahead.

I ran the Rotella synthetic 6k miles and just changed again.

I'm not sure who makes the mopar stuff but I think I remember hearing somewhere that Penzoil makes the so called special 6spd oil for dodge.  Just a thought. I changed to synthetics at 10,000 miles with no problem. :D :D I also do alot of towing so I'm sure my engine was broken in or at least by gas engine standards! :D :D Corey

If you are stock 10k+ oil changes are fine with synthetic.

I recently installed a new turbo and cam and thought an oil change couldnt hurt anything.

Along with using a little extra fuel once in a while!

When we've done synthetic in a gasser that's had more than a couple thousand miles on it we've had to run the syn for about 1,000 miles and change it... then sometimes do it again at the next 1,000 miles. We had a 1500 ram 318 and at 16,000 went to amsoil... after about 2500 miles the truck lost oil pressure and when we checked it out the pump had gone out and the bottom of the oil pan was sludge. Looking into the engine it was clean as a whistle but all the gunk in the oil pan killed the filter. It seemed to us the synthetic had really cleaned up the motor??

I suppose my point is with the cummins... once you hit the right mileage to switch to synthetic... can you just change it and run... or should you switch... and make a change or 2 after short mileage before going to regular intervals?

I do beleive Valvolene makes the oil for Mopar. I have changed out many of these CTD trucks to synthetics, and have found anywhere between 8,000 and 12,000 miles is a good time to change over from petrolium to synthetics. Just get a Group IV based fluid to get the best in synthetics.

Syn. didn't do that to that Ram. The oil pumps I've seen never failed its just that he pickup screen is clogged up. Soak the screen in old fashion carb cleaner(the stuff that eats hair off your arm)and put it back togather and their fine. Handled dozens upon dozens of them. Its called a lack of maintance before the syn. was used.
