I've known RP to be good synthetic, not outstanding. D1 or series 3000 amsoil are top notch.



Also those guys at bob's forum can't agree on anything, LOL. It's a good forum tho, I have been reading it for a year or two.

Mobil Delvac 1 and Royal Purple 15W40 are API Licensed to meet the recommended API CI-4/SL that the new engines are calling for.



Amsoil Series 3000, although maybe a very good oil, is NOT licensed by Amsoil with the API. You can check that out on the www.api.org site and do a search under engine oil licensing program.



Big difference in my book if I have a 40K + truck and a warranty.

Amsoil 3000 is 5W-30. Spec in owner's manual is for 5W-40 synthetic (or 15W-40 conventional). Any problem with it not meeting the viscosity spec?

Oils

We had a 91, a 95, and now our 03. We have used Delo in all three and it has stood the test of time. We have changed oil at 4 to 5 thousand miles in all and will do the same with the 03.



In fact I just did the first change at 3000 miles on the 03. They must have put the filter on with a big cheater bar as it was a chore to get it loose.

WE got the filter wrench from Genos but had to use a strap wrench to get it loose, then the filter wrench worked great.



Much easer to change from the bottom on the 03 than from the top on the other trucks.

Regardless, Jevers, CI-4 is the best API spec for diesel oils at the moment, so you are in the right ballpark!! People have used rotella T for millions of miles. However some of us who are car nuts prefer the premium synthetics. Your call! Congrats on your new truck

I have to say this at every oil war...

According to the service manual, 15w-40 (which is what Cummins puts in when the engine leaves the factory) can be used down to 0* F. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe no one makes a 5w-40 dinosaur oil that complies with the CI-4 standard. Since you can't use synthetic oil until after breakin, you're stuck with 15w-40



So I just got off the phone with the local Cummins shop and they recommend sticking with 15w-40 year round here. There are mornings when the temperature is below 0. I always plug in below 40 anyways.



Now comes the part I say in every oil war : I use Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40, which I get at the aforementioned Cummins shop in bottles that have the Cummins logo on it and say "This product is endorsed and recommended by Cummins Engine, Inc. ". This is the oil your engine comes from the factory with. If I ever decide to switch to synthetic, it'll be Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w-40, which I will run only in winter.

If you use the block heater, I don't think you ever have to worry about running an oil made for below 0* F. Unless there are times when you're spending the night out in the middle of nowhere with no place to plug in.

I know Cummins has the Valvoline PB so it seems logical that the Cummins motors come with PB, but I am not 100% certain about this. Does anyone know with for sure???

Powermaster at Cummins website says fill is Valvoline non-synthetic etc. , blah,blah.

Just send an email to < -- email address removed -- >. He said in an email "We do believe that Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40 is the factory oil fill, the (mineral oil base stock) non-synthetic product. "



You could ask him who fills the engines, Cummins or DC. If DC fills the engines, then I'd venture to say they'd put in anything they had handy, turpentine thickened with molasses, etc.



Just be sure you indicate the proper engine with your question to him.

One other comment...

BTW, let's remember why synthetic was put on the market in the first place: for it's flow characteristics at low temperatures. When I lived farther North, that was the main reason I used synthetics... because dino oil at 30* is like pouring molasses, while synthetic still runs like oil.



Also, just so we're clear, I don't proclaim that Valvoline PB is any better than anything else. In fact, I think Rotella, Delo, and PB are all on par.

I cahanged the oil in my truck at 500 total miles and sent a sample to Blackstone Labs. I asked if they could identify the oil. They replied, "... appears to be a Citgo product".
