I recently did an engine overspeed. I pulled the shift lever down to first and apparently touched the accelerator pedal. The transmission dropped into first, sending the engine speed to near 4000 rpm. (My previous vehicle would not downshift until it was safe for the engine to do so. )

The engine seems to be running just fine. Should I be concerned? Should I take the vehicle in to have the engine checked or just cuss myself for being so stupid and be more careful in the future?

Any of you guy with significant diesel experience have suggestions?

don't worry about it... valves don't begin to float on the engine until about 4200rpm. i've down shifted my truck so its been up to about 3800 rpm while going down to 3rd... didn't mean to do it [i usually don't go over 3200rpm downshifting] but i am not worried...

If you trully over speed it it will leave a code. 4k is not a problem for a short burst like that but you might check for the code.

As I recall I did the potential overspeed last Sunday. On Monday I took the vehicle to the dealer for the two recalls (PCM connector and transmission cooler). Wouldn't the dealer have read the codes before and/or after performing the work? They didn't say anything to me about a code.

Otherwise, I don't think I have the capability to check the codes--do I? I don't have a reader. If there is an overspeed code, how should I treat it?

Thanks,

Doug

I just found out about the Key/odometer method to read the codes. I checked. I have no codes set. Guess I'll quit worring about the potential overspeed.

Only problem now is the computer seems to be averaging a very small number of data points when computing mileage. Hopefully this is just because the shop disconnected the battery when they did the recall maintenance. Guess it has to learn what is going on again.
