Pinging in gassers is detonation of fuel before ignition spark occurs due to heat of compression, or spark simply occurs too soon. In this case, fuel is present during the compression stroke.

If you had a leaky injector or oil vapor in the intake air, this could create a ping during the compression stroke.

pinging

my motorhome with a C8. 3 has a sound that is like an old gasser preigniting. haven't heard it with the 24 valve. i had the C gone over at cummins south. they adjusted the valves, checked the injectors, and retimed it. still does it. i have been told to ignore it. the owner's manual mentions it and calls it "fuel knocking", but doesn't give any info further. i don't like the sound!! for those who haven't heard it, it is distinct from the diesel ignition "clatter".

Minr just started the light pinging with this tank of fuel.

THere is a post on fuel that smells of gasoline. I think mine has a hint of gas.

I bought it in Springfield Ill On thursday , east side of town.

I need to invetigate.

mine started to ping when i added too much propane also when i had the great idea of cleaning my K&N with gasoline

TERMINATOR these guys are giving you a hard time

I know what you're talking about. There is one specific point in the throttle travel of my truck where my engine rattle is much tinnier and pingy-sounding, rattle is much more pronounced.

My guess would be you got a bad load of fuel. Bad, low cetane fuel doesn't ignite as readily and when it does, it burns more violently. There is more fuel in the cylinder since it didn't light off as quickly.

I would suggest trying a quality fuel conditioner like Stanadyne Performance Forumula. Also try getting fuel somewhere else.

extra noise

vaughn, i've tried all of the above on the C8. 3. it seems worse when the weather is cool. only does it under moderate acceleration, and under load. let up on the go pedal, or floor it and it stops. i wonder if it has something to do with the cooler air being more dense??, therefore more O2 in the combustion chamber??

I installed autometer fuel pressure gauge today and pressure at idle 9psi under load 3psi bad lift pump 1st one cant complain 77,000 maybe ping was lack of fuel.
