Today after driving about 100 miles, about 10 miles from home my truck died. It did not show any signs of running any different before it did it, no check engine light or nothing. Just fueled up about 60 miles up the road. I pulled up to a light and it just shut off. I have a fuel psi guage and everything seemed normal. I cracked the lines on the filter housing and she pumped clear fluid ( no air ). I unhooked the ez and still nothing. Called the wrecker and after waiting about 30 minutes I decided to try it again. It fired up and ran ruff but after about 3 minutes it cleared up. Reved up fine and seemed like all was good. I pulled it in gear and she cut off and would not crank again. Wrecker pulled me home. I went and picked up a new fuel filter thinking maybe dirty fuel. Filter looked clean with no signs of water. Changed it out bled all lines and finally she fired up. Running a little ruff at first but cleared up. I let it sit there and idle ( in neutral ) for about 10 minutes. Reved and ran fine in neutral. Cut it off and it would not crank. Finally fired up again and let it set and run 10 more minutes, pulled it in gear and it cut off. It's like there is no power there. I only have 51,000 miles on her and I have the extended warranty. I just wanted to make sure it was not something small that I could fix. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Dion

I don't have a way to check them. It's a 99 and the way I understand you need a scan tool to read them. Could be wrong though.

Drain some of the fuel into a clear glass jar and let it sit for about 10 minutes to settle and see if there is water of gas in it.

Might also be a boost issue. Check all your intercooler boots for tears, cuts, and connection.

I'm going to venture that your VP44 may have failed.

You say it has good fuel pressure. My son's VP44 acted like that after it failed. Would start and idle okay. Short jabs would rev it up. But go in gear and try to drive off and it got bad in a hurry. He had to idle home from his last trip.

Looks like a trip to the $tealership for some warranty engine work.

It's a 99 so even if he's under 100k he'd had a short window of time to still be in warranty (hopefully, for his wallet's sake he's in that short window).

I rented the scanner from Autozone. It shows a po216 code 2 times. Does this mean the vp44 is toast or what ? I just bought the truck from a Dodge dealership about 6 months ago and I also bought the extended warranty. I drained some fuel and it looks clear. I called the last fuel stop I had made and they have not any other complaints. I just wanted to make sure I did not have the truck towed to the dealership and find out it was bad gas or something else they would want to charge me for.

Do I need to erase the codes while I have the scanner or leave them be ? I took the Edge EZ off so I should be good to go.

Thanks, Dion
