My clutch side thrust bearing just dropped out a couple of months ago. A little over 110 bucks for the oil pan gsk, rods and mains and oil pickup gsk from Cummins. I got lucky and caught it before any crank or block damage occured. I dont know about the 4wd versions. But on my 2wd version the manual trans had to be dropped and the engine had to be lifted up a considerable amount.

thanks for all the help. hey phil i will be giving you a call this week and see what i really have with this small problem of mine. once agian thanks for the help and info . rodney

I am not convinced that the trust bearings are bad. If the touque converter was not all the way in properly and they just drew the trans up tight with the bolts it will flex the flexplate forward maby enough to rub. can you get under the truck and get something on the dampner to move back and forth to chech end play.

Yes, the TC could definately be the problem. As philip suggested, take a bar and move the damper back and forth. Anything over . 015 is excessive. Mine felt like about a 1/4" when the thrust went down on mine.

better do some checking. I have a 1993 5. 9 thats taken out three thrust bearings and I

cant find the cause. Thrust bearing failures can be caused by balooned converters, restricted trans. coolers, cracked crankshafts, bent connecting rods, and some types of misalignment, among other things. I'm also looking for ideas. cummins tech line said they have never heard of the problem. I have a hard time believing that. Someones got to have an answer. Good luck.

FWIW... . One of Piers' engine's was found to hav . 080" end play... nasty... and it WILL take other things out with it if not fixed... it's called progressive damage and it's a certainty if not addressed...

pb... .

thanks guys. i got under the truck and checked the end play it moves almost a 1/2 inch!! so i am going to pull the motor and do a rebuild not for sure when but it will be done. thanks phil for the some good info i will let you know when i get started. rodney
