engine problems

my dad has a 05 that has engine problems but we cant narrow it down and the dealer here in burley idaho don't know their head from their rear i think it is mechanical problems but the computer checks out he has loss of power some times but then runs fine other times we recently drag raced and i beat him i have a 98 12v stock and his is stock too both manual mine is a 5 and his a 6 his biggest ? is in 2000 rpm range he sometimes gets a surge of power i feel this is normal but there are some times where there is no power in the 2k rpm range we think the waste gate is sticking open but we are also wandering if it did wouldn't it send a code to the computer unfortunately we don't have any gauges on it other than stock its a 3500 srw it has 23k miles on it and this is his first cummins please let us know or if any one can direct us to a better qualified dealer thanks Dustin & Steve

I'm not sure if the computer would see an under boost condition as a fault or error code, but would fuel accordingly I believe.



A cheap way to cause a problem and gain some insight would be to disable the wastegate altogether, see what it does?
