What is the difference between a long block and a short block?

In general terms, a "long block" includes the cylinder head(s). A "short block" doesn't.

Long block has a Head installed on it.



A short block is just pistons and crank (basically) and block.

Thanks. Now. . on to majoring in minors, wordsmith style: Why wouldn't the block with the head be called a tall block, instead of a long block? Grammatically speaking, it would be more accurate.

In Mexico a short block is called a 1/2 motor and a long block is a 3/4 motor. Seems logical to me.....
