:mad:Friends 2001 Dodge 4x4 has a problem with engine stopping after a few minutes of running and will not start until engine is cool. He has changed fuel pump twice and still has same problem. Any ideas?

Cycle your ignition key on-off 3 times--do not start vehicle-on the third leave ith ignition on look at your odometer-it will show any codes set--let us know

It probably has something to do with the inj. pump (VP-44). Not a code you want to see usually- most often leads to replacing of the VP-44 inj. pump. Any recent changes done to the truck recently that might have triggered that code? How is the fuel pressure- what does it read? (If you have a fuel pressure gauge).

P0216 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure. High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway. Did any others come up such as 336, 1287 or 1690. All these codes should trip the light also.

Injection pump was changed a year ago in the last week the pump has been changed twice and same condition. Fuel pressure starts out at 13psi and after three minutes it bleeds down to =O=. Only one code is showing 216.

What kind of lift pump is he running? I have seen lift pumps not work and we pull it and bench test and it works. Motor was weak and would not maintain pressure. We then put in a new pump and it worked fine. Hows the fuel filter, been changed lately?

The thing is 2 gen 24v trucks will start and run with a bad transfer pump and without a fuel pressure gauge you will not know you're ruining the VP pump. Then comes time and just dies, truck runs rough, fails to start... With this code I'll test the VP pump. Hopefully it's not it. Hopefully the transfer/lift pump is good, clean fuel filter, no restriction in the tank, tight connections. My in tank pick up was clogged up, sometimes lowering my pressure to 0 psi. Once I saw that I dropped the tank and removed the screen, installed Drawstraw and new fuel lines from tank to the VP-44. Not and issue after that. But I have always monitored my fuel pressure since new. Thanks to the folks here on TDR, you guys have saved me thousands.
