I'm posting this for my husband. He is on his way to work and having engine trouble. The Check Engine light came on, the tachometer began jumping from 0 to 2000 rpm, and the engine is quitting at stops.

Any help would be appreiciated.

Worked 24 hr shift on the way home she ran fine for the first 20 miles. Then tach started jumping around from 2000 - 00 rpm and runnung rough. Then after 2-3 miles ran good. Pulled fault code p 1693 using key on off on off on method. Can anybody tell me what this code means. 2000 quad cab 4x4 stock. Thanks for uour help.

Possibly a failing CPS (Crank Position Sensor).

I would go to AutoZone and see if they can scan the codes for you.

The 1693 is a companion code. This means there is a "Soft Code" stored in the computer (either PCM or ECM) that can not be displayed with the key on/off method.

This code indicates that other codes have been set. By it self, it means nothing.

A crank sensor is only about $80 (from Cummins) and is relatively easy to change. See if you can find out the codes. Let us know, we will be more than glad to help.
