One of my workmates lost a valve into the number 3 cylinder damaging the piston. He still has a good size loan on the 2003 6 speed 4x4 truck with 125K miles. It looks like he needs a new head and at least a piston. Rebuild or swap in a long block? The truck has been stock since he bought it at 69k so, the first owner must have beat on it.

Anyone know of a long block in the South East? The shop is recommending a used engine to swap in. He just wants to stay at 305/555. It looks like at least $4k worth of :{... . Any recommended shops in the Charlotte NC area?

buy a remanned head from cummins 1200 dollars and a piston 150. 00, then a gasket kit 200. 00 in frame the number 3 re-using rod bearing, throw a cylinder hone down the cylinder and cross hatch it, clean it, reassemble, run it for a day around town and change the oil and filter, it will be fine... .

I have the same problem but on the number 1 piston..... I will find the extent of the damage tomorrow as my mechanic will pull the head... . I have read where ppl have been putting on a 2006 head on the 03's... Does anyone know why???

i have an 06 cylinder head on my o3, i was told the 06 has a higher cfm rating and better valves and seats. .

The 04. 5-07 5. 9 trucks have a redesigned head that made to get rid of the valve dropping problem. The truck could have done it even if it wasn't beat on.

03s have bad valve seats. there is a TSB out about them. I dropped cyl#1 exhaust valve. after 300,000km have heard valves dropping as early as 100,000km. get a new head, piston and gasket kit should be good to go! dont forget to check your turbo out for damage.

If not I can get a BRAND NEW COMPLETE 03 305/555 motor (set up for a 6spd) for around 5500.

$5500, that's like the price for a gas engine!

Wow, I didn't know they were that cheap! Is that the usual price for a SO? I guess I will hotrod my existing 05 engine (I was going to anyway!) Is there anything I'm missing here about the price MattyMac? Is this from Cummins or what?

What is the TSB number, any idea?

They were bought at auction because the trucks were damaged on the train in transit. My buddy bought a few of them and he now has one left. Zero problems with all the other motors he had. The trucks werent damaged very bad, just enough were DC said they arent taking their chances (liability reasons). The trucks were in very good shape, mainly cosmetic damage.
