I was wondering if anyone knows if the 24v Cummins can be rebuilt? Someone said that Cummins engines cannot be rebuilt and you have to throw them away but I cannot believe that. Thought? Experiences? I just want to settle the argument.

Thanks.

If you want something official, why not call your local Cummins dealer and ask if they have a Recon 24V available for your truck?

I do not need and engine for my truck it was one of those campfire discussions I had with a Chevy owner (consider the source). But that is a good idea about calling the local Cummins 'Palace'.

rebuild

Mine is rebuilt. I did it myself, except for the bore and hone job.

The hardest part is extracting information from Cummins part system and slow parts delivery unless you want to pay a premium.

I know you don't need an engine for your truck. ;) All I was suggesting is to check with Cummins to find out if they rebuild engines. The easy way to do that (IMHO) is to find out if they have a reconditioned engine (RECON) available for your truck. That way, you would have it "from the horse's mouth," so to speak.

Rebuild

According to the manual (if you don't blow the side out) the engine block has enough meat for two rebores/rebuilds. bg

This comes from over the road diesel mechanics who "re-build" engines in the frame by changing the cylinder liners. Our "puny" 5. 9s do not have removeable liners so the block has to be machined for a rebuild.

Most Cummins shops will order a short block and build the engine from there. It is easier on them to assemble the engine there than trying to track down the correct long block with everything correct.

To answer your question, If you have the time and money, you can rebuild anything. Yes, all the parts are available from Cummins. Even if you have a blown cylinder, you can over-bore and then insert a sleve to reclaim a block. Yes, this is an approved rebuild method for this block, though I would not trust it for more than stock applicaions.

I work at a machine shop. Just in the process of doing a 5. 9 24v for a customer now. The engine experienced a piston strike in the #6 cylinder. We started by disassembling the head. Magnufluxed it and found all 6 cylinder ports to be cracked.

Cost of a rewelded bare head..... $ 1200. 00

install parts necessary to load head... . $200. 00

Labor... ... $120. 00

Thought I would call the Cummins dealer for a price of a new bare head.

Cost... ... ... . $ 2100. 00

add parts and labor same as option 1 above.

Here is where it gets interesting!

Called DC for price ( I knew this was going to be a laugh ). Cost for a loaded reconditioned head..... $ 1276. 00

Core... ... . $600. 00

I was shocked that the dealer price was cheaper than Cummins. So I questioned the parts guy ( someone at DC that I have been doing business for years ) He tells me that DC and Cummins have a arrangment on recon engine parts.

Moral to this delema..... go to DC. ( I can't believe I am typing this ).

The engine block will get by with a hone. But as stated before, can easily be bored or sleeved back to standard size.

The crankshaft was magnafluxed... . no damage. polish and reinstall.

One connecting rod bent. Replace. Customer supplied, so I don't know how much it cost.

The aftermarket boys need to get going for parts on these motors. There is not much available. Must go to Cummins for most parts.

Piston ( from Cummins ) $160. 00

Upper gasket kit ( Cummins ) $137. 00

Lower gasket kit ( Cummins ) $240. 00

I am only showing these prices so you can get an idea what it costs to overhaul a 24 v 5. 9 B-series Cummins motor. I have no desire to use this forum for any kind of promotion.

Thanks for the info Ram_Kowboy. You are right about the aftermarket boys making parts for these engines. It would be nice to have choices.

The head you supplied cost $1520

The head from DC would have cost $1276.

would you have had to pay the $600 core charge?

If so total from DC would have been $1876.

Yes, the customer would have to pay the core charge on the DC head. However the DC head is new and the welded head is not.

At this time I am do not know the mileage of the truck. I need to contact my customer Monday. I intend to find out more about the nature of the failure ( i. e. overspeed etc. ). I will also ask about truck mileage.

Cummins literature states the block can be rebuilt up to 6 times. For a grand total of 1. 8 million miles at 300k per rebuild.

Sleeved blocks initially cost much more but are cheaper to rebuild mostly because they can be done without pulling the motor. Pointless on our trucks because of the limited access to the motor compared to a medium duty truck. None of these light mediums are sleeved that I know about. The PSD the duramax and the cummins are all parent bored. No sleeves. None of these are cheap to rebuild and all have to be pulled to resleeve or overbore.
