I have a 93 350 dually with 360K on it. Compression is low. I am planning on removing it

and rebuilding it. The Dodge service manual says

to remove the transmission. It appears as if

the engine will drop when the transmission is removed.

I guess the best thing to do would be to support

the engine from the top. Anyone shed some light?

Gonna start this week so any advise would be

greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Geez, I never gave much thought on removing the mighty B, but I guess it's inevitable! Going from memory, the oil pan seems tight to the crossmember, so sliding the engine forward and then up might be tough. That could be why they want the trans out first. This might be a trial and error thing. I think the 6B is too heavy to support from the top unless you have a crane hold it. I say use a bottle jack and wood under the pan or adapter housing if the trans does have to come out. Let us know the outcome when you decide to do it. Good luck.

I would think that the standard picker would be about at its limit with just the Cummins. The trans may push it over and would make it harder to swing out. With the hook off it you will still have to slid the engine forware to clear the overhang of the body work.

I would suspect that when you reach the point of actually lifting the engine outta the bay, you would need one of those lifting attachments that allow the tilt of the engine to be adjusted while it's being removed - that engine would seem to have to be VERY highly angled to clear both ends of the engine bay during removal... And yeah - it's REAL heavy, so will require a SUBSTANTIAL hoist for the job...

I am in thr process of changing out my engine and trans(see signature). What I am doing is removing the front core support and taking the engine and trans out the front. It is a big load for the cherry picker but it will lift it. I have already checked it with the 95 motor and 6sp.

Good luck, Rod

One thing you didn't mention is if you have an auto or manual trans. If you have an auto, do like a friend and I did on his truck. Remove ALL the externals [hood, radiator, fan, turbo, ect] and lift it out with a overhead type lift as a standard engine puller will become unsafe at the height you need to clear the body. And remember, that engine is 990lbs. just unbolt the torque converter and bellhousing and leave all that in place and the engine only needs to go ahead about 2" and up she goes.

If you have a manual trans I would pull the nose off the truck to make your life easier.

Heck, just pull it anyway. then you can check for cawl cracks and clean everything real good.

If it's a 4x4 I would leave either trans in place and support them well. You know what works great is one of those jacks that come with little pick-ups so you can adjust the angle of the trans during instalation.

Just be careful, OK?
