I've noticed sometimes when I'm just starting out and the truck isn't warm, there is a loud roaring noise in 1-3rd gears. Don't get me wrong, it sounds pretty cool, like i'm in a jet, but I didn't know if there was a problem. I've heard people mention this when they are towing, but it only occurrs on startup.

If you have the heater line from the fire wall to the block going in to the block back in the middle of the block try moving it forward to enter one holes closer to the water pump. That may help did for me. Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY

Well, if Im correct I believe this is just added noise from the fan clutch because it is engaged. With the fan clutch engaged the engine works a little harder and warms up quicker. Nothing to be alarmed about, I usually let mine warm up about 2-3 minutes every day on my way to the farm. On hot days in south Idaho it will sometimes engage when sitting at a stop light to cool the water better.

Yupper, nothing to worry about. Mine does the same thing. Mine locked up for 10 mins on the highway this weekend pulling a long grade. It can kinda get annoying!

The fan clutch is still engaged from the last time the truck was used. After start up mine will sound similar to what you are describing, especially after truck sits overnite and cools down. After a mile or so down the road it should disengage, if engine is cool.

Mine does the same thing, like everyone said it is the fan clutch. Mine will disengage at about 1800 rpm while cool so I only hear the sound for about a minute in the morning.
