I own a 99 and have been having problems with the truck wanting to fire up. Some times i will go out and it will start up just fine, next time i try it will sit there and crank away. i replaced the lift pump about a 1 1/2 ago, and replaced the fuel filter the last time i changed the oil about 2 months ago. I have a fuel gauge mounted on top of my fuel filter housing and it is reading at idle 9 and under throttle 15+ it only reads up to 15. Im wondering if i should install new lift pump or can it be somthing else. i also have replaced the gas cap because i have heard of stupid problems caused by leaky ones. if anyone has any suggestions let me know.

what the hell

i have a diesel pickup truck on a diesel forum and nobody has a reply. this must not have happend to anyone else. i think its time to let my tdr subscription run out. thanks for all helpful insite and the bogus stickers for the lunch box.

Since this prob only occurs sometimes, I would be suspicious of the fuel return circuit letting air in the system therefore allowing fuel to drain back to the tank.

Is there a relationship between hard starting and level of fuel in tank?

Is there a relationship between pickup parked angle vs hard start. (nose uphill)

What sometimes can happern is that the return line in the tank terminates above the fuel level. .

Mine does this sometimes also after the removal of the stock lp & filter housing and replacing it with the fass. It only does it when it's warm and I can stop it by bumping the starter and allowing the pump to run for a short time before I crank it. I know it isn't right but haven't had the time to mess with it yet!

He dun got mad and sold that truck.

Codes, fuel level, fuel pressure shouldn't increase with demand, LP is mighty old, bad fuel will plug a new filter in a few minutes, cross-over tube leak will give hard start. VP44's give a myriad of problems when taking their last gasps of fuel.

Maybe a search of this here goodfernuthin website. :p Cuz sometimes a question that has been asked several dozen times gets ignored--not that I ignored yours or anything. Just didn't see it. I don't look real hard at the 24v forums. :-laf

im trying

i replaced my fuel filter, charged batteries to full, replaced fuel cap and filled the fuel tank full. when i bump the lift pump the fuel pressure reads 6 psi. and it seems like it primed the fuel. is this lp bad, should i just try and replace it or cough up the cash to take it in.

I would definately get the codes read, but sounds like a vp story. It is possible that it is something stupid. I have read alot of posts & learned that when someone has a fueling box & a stock lift pump..... It is usually a vp. I would start with a scan tool before buying anything. If a scan tool isn't available... go to Auto Zone or Advance & get it done for free. Good Luck... . Hope I'm wrong.
