A friend of mine called a while ago and said that his 05 Dodge Ram 3500 TD Auto would not shut down. He unhooked the batteries and it still ran on.

Any ideas? I told him turn on all the lights, AC and put in gear to put as much demand on the alternator and kill the engine. It is Sunday and no Shops are open.

No, I don,t think that he has a turbo timer.

It is a pure stock truck.

He finely unpluged the wiring harness at the firewall and it turned off.

First time have heard of it on a 3rd gen.

If he disconnected the bateries the only thing to keep it running would be stuck injectors or enough oil getting into the cylinders to cause combustion.

I feel quite sure that it is the Ignition Switch but there is no-place to take it in today. (sunday)

He is going to have it towed in tomorrow.

Thanks for the input

Wouldn't disconnecting the batteries interrupt the whole electrical circuit, thereby cutting off power to the ecm? I'm really curious as to how that happens. By the way, for future use, any runaway diesel should be able to be stalled out by stuffing a towel, coat, etc in the air intake from the filter area to choke off the air supply. We were taught this when I was first learning to drive for my CDL just in case we ran into this problem. Fortunately, I've never had to use it, so I can't speak from experience.
