I have a 2001 3500 that recently had a new engine installed in it by Dodge warranty. The new engine develops a higher running temperature that my old Cummins. The old engine would pull my 25' gooseneck all day long with ambient temps of 105+ and never break the third line on the temp gauge. My new engine is always heating up to and beyong that level, I do watch it carefully and keep the operating temp in the good range. Is this a normal condition? Is there a cure if it is not normal? Please get back to me, I have been gleaning information from this forum for several months and figure you guys know best!!

Overheating

Here are some suggestions you may find helpful. I assume the radiator was not changed. First, why was the engine repalced? There may be a clue lurking there that would answer the question at hand. Following are general things to look at.



1. Is the antifreeze mix 50/50 or thinner? Antifreeze will not transfer heat as well as water. You could use 30 antifreeze and 70% water in your climate for better heat transfer. If they accidently put in too much antifreeze concenteration that could be a problem.



2. Did the dealer put the fan on backwards? It will still push air but not as well. I don't know for sure if it is possible to put it on backwards in a dodge, but that happens in many shops.



3. When it overheats, does the fan come on to try to cool it or not?



4. Did the new engine come with a sending unit for your gage? It may be mis matched. You can verify the gage with a infared temp gun pointed at the thermostat housing. Most shops have one.



5. Because diesels do not have a throttle in the air system, the engine does little work (heat rejection) at idle and part load. It is very common to only experience over temperature problems at loaded situations. This does not diminish the fact that there is a problem.



6. It could have a bad thermostat in it, or the rubber seal could be folded up holding the bypass open. That has happened before. Fairly easy to check in the shop.



7. Do you measure EGT? If so has it changed? A leak in the intercooler or hoses could result in a loss of boost and higher temps, or loss of power.



These are general ideas. Someone more knowledgable on the Dodge could chime in.



Good luck, and get after the installer who changed the engine to help get it right.
