I just finished installing the larger starter contacts and the Solenoid Saver Diode on my '97.

Starter works great now. Trouble is that the engine won't always shut off; I thought the diode was supposed to prevent that.

I wasn't having this problem before I made the changes to the starter.

When I first got done reinstalling the starter and hooking up the batteries, the truck started right up and shut off when I turned the key to the "OFF" position.

Later on, when I had the information from Sony to reset the radio, I started the truck and reset the radio. It was when I tried to shut it off that the problem first began.

Could the radio itself be backfeeding somehow, keeping the fuel solenoid energized? ( Never had that problem before either)

I finally got the engine to shut off by fiddling with the key/ignition switch, so maybe the problem lies somewhere in the switch.

Any ideas?

There was a recall on ignition switches. I don't know if it applies to your truck, but you should check to see if it does.

There are a couple of outstanding recalls but none for the ignition switch.

However...

I did some poking around underhood today... had Mrs. Loghead shut the truck off while I felt the fuel shutoff solenoid plunger with my fingertip. At shutoff, the plunger began to slooooowwwwly descend, until the engine indeed stopped.

I sprayed the linkage where the bellcrank shaft is attached to the injector pump with WD-40 and after that the engine will shut off when the key is turned off.

A coincidence?

Maybe; I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this situation.

It's probably cruded up a bit. WD-40 is NOT a lube. It's a water displacement. It will evaporate. Use LPS #2 or some other lube that will last a while.
