I have the new 600. When you shutdown the engine there is a belt squeal and bit of engine shake is this normal?? I just don't remember it in the SO's that I test drove. I called the SVC Dept. and there response was that it is normal for all Cummiins engines to do that, due to the high compression. He said he could tighten or replace the belt but that the squeal would come back and that no damage was being done.

The sound you are most likely hearing is the belt tensioner. It is normal. The motor stops faster than the accessories so it makes the belt emit a chirp sond when you shut it down. It is more pronounced when you have an additional load on, like the A/C

I think that is my favorite part of owning a diesel. When you go to turn your engine off, you don't just shut it down, you disengage your machine.

I'd be inclined not to tighten the belt; If the fan has to stop that suddenly there must be quite a shock load on it. Might make you more likely to break a fan blade.

I think its just new owner hyper sensitivity. I know that if something is going to screw up it will probablly be in the first 1000 miles or so. So I'm looking pretty close for faults. I never associated the chirp people had refered to as the shut down noise I was hearing.

Thanks for the responses

It happens most on Auto trucks because the engine stops so fast due to high compression. The 6-speed trucks have a heavy flywheel so they spin a few compressions at shutdown.

There should be a little thing in your owners manual that was ment for the mirror to let you know about the chirping i had one of these in my manual package.
