Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Performance

In the last two months my truck has been doing some strange things. First off it needed a VP44 so that was changed. I had the tps changed due to a fault code. I had also replaced one SunCoast converter with another. I went to something looser that fit better with my HP level.

Here is the real issue. My truck will sometime stall going into drive.

In the mornings I have to warm up the truck for at least 5 minutes before I can thinking about putting it in drive or it stalls.

Lately it has been doing this trick even when fulley warmed up.

I can drive for a few hours and shut it off for 10-15 minutes and it will act up. Is there any change that changing my torque converter could have done this? The old was was tighter but a single disc. The new one is looser with a triple.

I am really stumped with this and starting to not like or want my truck anymore. please help.

Bill L. ,

I have the same problem. My truck will also stumble when going into drive. I talked to Scheid last week and will also talk to them today. I have code 1693 and I think I will travel out there to have them plug there computer into it. It is nice to be in the same town with Scheid. My problem occurs most often when the truck has been running for a while. I don't know what the problem is either, but I will look into it today. I will try to keep you posted.

Kess,

Thanks for the info.

I don't think that I have any codes frm this problem. The only codes I had were from the VP44.

I am going to try and calibrate the tps/apps this morning and see if that makes any difference.

Let me know what you find on your truck.

Can anyone else help with this? I have calibrated the TPS a couple of times. The truck drives great. Starting cold is still a problem. Reverse is fine but drive dies with or without my Comp on.

Talking to SunCoast one guy told me a couple weeks ago it sounded like a converter problem but now Joe is saying that it is not.

He thinks I need a tsb which the onlything that comes to mind is the 18-014-01 but this says it is for 49 state trucks and cold weather.

Not sure why I would not need this flash with a tight converter but now need it with a looser converter.

Anyone?

I need help with this ASAP. I am to the point of getting rid of the truck so that I do not have to deal with it any more.

Bill

18-01. 5-15 rev A fixed the problem in my truck for a while and it looks like the one you mention above is the same reflash for your year truck.

I still have the problem but now it only happens when I run the crappy winter fuel in Alaska and only about twice a week. The probem is probaby with your TPS voltage, although I think its big injectors, tight torque converters. There is not much else you can do other than the reflash. I have a buddy that had the problem and he got every reflash, a new VP44 and a new TC/VB and it did not fix the problem. Now he keeps 150 gallons of summer fuel in his garage to make his own winter mix. The one trick that seems to work is shifting from park to neutral and leaving it in N for about 20 seconds, then shifting to D. If you do a search there are a couple of thread on this problem

**edit**

Here is a thread I started about the problem.

JR2,

Thanks for the info. I have seen your posts about this while researching the problem.

It just seems really strange that going from a tight converter to a looser converter would do this.

Nothing else really changed.

The first time I start the truck for the day I have to warm it for at least 5 minutes no matter what the temp is outside.

It is also strange that it happens if I shut the truck off for 10 minutes to go into a store.

I will see about getting these flashes done ASAP.

JR2,

Thanks again for the info.

My TPS is new but that doesnt mean much of anything.

It was changed around the same time as the converter swap.

I did the calibration trick on it and have not seen any error codes on anything.

I do have a new vp44 since it was slowly dieing.

My biggest problem is understanding why one tc from Suncoast would be find in my truck for almost a year with these injectors and now the new looser tc has a problem with them.
