Engine Sound

Hey guys, I have a question about the sound of my engine. It seems to be really quiet. I have heard other 3rd gens and some of them sound alot louder (kinda like the older say 2000 or 2001 motors). Is there something that they are doing to get more noise out of it, or do they just vary from truck to truck? I was thinking that the smarty would make it a little louder with the timing advance, but it didn't. I really don't mind it being so quiet, but it does sound alittle like a gasser. Let me know if there's something that can be done to increase the engine sound, or am I just stuck with a quiet diesel motor. Thanks

I've found every common rail truck sounds slightly different. Not sure why yours is so quiet, although I've heard that performing a valve adjustment tends to quiet them down a lot... have you done this?

lol I'm on the other side of it, My 06 seems to be alot louder than most CR 5. 9s I hear. Its loud with out mucload on it but once it starts earning its keep it seems to mellow out and be down right quiet with a load bejind it and rollin 70 to 75 on the highway.

I have one of the loud ones. Sounds like a real diesel. I have no idea why.

Dad has an '03 that is much much quieter. We have different exhaust syatems, but his engine is what it sooooo amazingly quiet. Dad likes mine but I could handle the quieter ride every now and then.

My 04 will go decible for decible with any 24 valve out there. It is so loud at idle, sometimes I wonder if there isn't something wrong with it.



Many of these 2003 and newer trucks are so quiet, you gotta look for the badging to see what it's got under the hood!

My 04. 5 is "loud" even louder when its cold and/or the smarty is above sw3... Sometimes i also wonder if its getting ready to scatter

I guess I have a super quiet one 08 you have to walk up next to it to make sure it's even running from outside . But after haveing my stright piped crewcab this sure is a change .

To make it sound great get a muffler elimination kit from Geno's. It is easy to install and doesn't increase the noise to anything that would be bothersome. If you really want it to sound great get an AFE stage two filter (pricy but worth it) also from Geno's. Hearing the turbo whistle is music to my ears.

07. 5 and 08, forget it, super quiet. It may as well be a gasser under the hood. With the new ULSD garbage we are forced to put in our tanks, owning a diesel isn't as fun as in the LSD days. Big brother watching over us. . gotta love it...
