Just curious ... my '03 w/17,000 miles on it has a rapid but faint "ticka-ticka-ticka" clatter sound in the background at 1800 no-load rpm and 62 mph or so. If it were a gasoline engine I'd say it was valve tappets clattering as a result of being a couple of quarts low on oil. Anybody got an idea what it might be?

Seems to be pretty normal I think most of them do it. Would seem to have to do with pilot injection timing. You should also get a little clatter at low rpms 800-900.

Discovered today that noise (or one like it) is coming up the 6-speed shifter from the tranmission (wife was driving so I could put my ears to stuff for noises).

Check and see if that's where your noise is coming from?

It's definitely an under-hood sound. Very faint, though. It's been there quite a while and sounds a bit like valve tappets. I just thought I'd mention it and see if others hear it too. It isn't the typical diesel clatter sound that we all know and love.

I think it's probably normal. Thanks ... truck sure runs good otherwise.
