I have a 2000 ISB with an auto transmission. This morning I noticed a sputtering when stopped at a light. Felt as if the truck was running out of fuel. This was followed by the check engine light. The truck seems to run OK when the throttle is down however the tachometer is jumping between 800 and 2000 rpm. This all seems to go away when the truck is warmed up but the engine light is still on.

I can not remember if the Key off- on three times and leave on works on your truck. If it does watch your odometer window and write down all the P???? codes it displays, or go to Autozone and have them pull the codes and let us know what they are.

Sounds like a crank position sensor. That's what usually makes the tach bounce up and down and it'll run weird too. They're easy to change and I don't think they're that spendy. . I can't remember what it was when I did mine, But I got it right from cummins.

The key trick worked. P1693 came up. I thought remember seeing a list of trouble codes printed in one of the last few issues. Does anyone know which one.

P1693. . that's all?

That code indicates that there is a companion code int the ECM. Did you hang around or leave it on until the odometer went back to normal (showed the mileage) It will show the PCU codes first (I think) flash --------- then, DONE then, P ECU, --------, PXXXX, ---------, DONE.

Weird. You will need to have am OBD II scanner hooked up to it to read the ocdes and kill the Check Engine light. Auto Zone does it for free, mechanics charge out the a$$.

You guys are great. Thanks for the help. I went to Auto Zone and had them read the codes. PO336 - Crankshaft Position Sensor like you said. I picked one up at Cummins and installed it today, seems to have done the trick. There was a core charge on it. Parts Guy said there have been a lot of failures with them, and they are being sent back to find ou why. My truck is still under warranty, but $35 out of pocket was worth it compared to the hassle you get at the dealership.
