I have a problem with my truck...
When I shift from park to drive or reverse the engine stalls. This does not always happen and it does not seem to make a difference if the truck is warm or cold. It also does not happen every time, some days it happens every time I put the truck in gear and others it does not happen at all. It all started when I had the DDT TC/VB and 275 RV injectors installed. I have since added the EZ edge and it had no effect on this problem. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your TC might go into lockup when you put it in gear. Maybe an adjustment is needed on your VB. DTT has great customer support from what I've read here. I'd contact them and see what they say.

Oh I forgot to mention that I talked to Bill K at DDT about the problem, he did not think there was a problem with the transmission. I am going to email him again and see if that is a possibility.

JR2--I'm just winging it here & wouldn't know what to do unless it's obvious, but it may give you more information when you talk ot Bill---
1) check transmission fluid level--is it high(drain if so), low(add)or is it OK
2) shift from park to neutral and then into R or D from there--not fast--I don't know what this would mean if it helps, but someone should
3) check your line pressure and adjust if needed--

good luck--I've got the same combo(haven't put the 275's in yet, but soon) and I don't have your problems---chris

Same transmission mods here, same problems.
It's definatively DTT stuff related.
Checked EVERYTHING, it must be the DTT TC and/or VB.
Thought's?
Marco.

P. S.
It happens only when you stop the hot engine/transmission and let the truck sit for an short period (1/2-1 hour). The problem shows then up at the next time I shift into
D or R without going through N.

Hey Guys,

I called Bill as he is on the road right now.

The most common problem for stalling 24 valves is TPS voltage is too low, your engine idle in gear warm should be 750rpm,
If the engine idle is too low , it will stall the vehicle.

The other thing to check is the fuel filter,

There is an engine ecm reflash for low engine idle , you may want to check Dave Fritz website, or does anyone have the # handy Bill doesnt have the number with him.

If you guys want to talk to Bill more about it,email us and we will give you his cell #

What exactly do you mean by stalling? Does the motor actually quit, requiring a restart?
I have a similar setup with DTT TC/VB, 275's and VA plus the edge. I notice especially when plowing which requires frequent shifting from D to R, that there is often a slight hesitation or pause in the engine, lasting approximately one second, after the shift. I assume this to be related to the load placed on the engine by the torque converter and I believe (hope) it is not harmful.

I had another thought on this. Does it do it when your holding the truck with the brakes? How about with the brakes released?
Maybe an idle problem. What if you hold the RPM a couple hundred higher? Does it make any difference if the A/C is on or off? Keeping in mind the A/C also cycles in the defrost mode.
I'm thinking if the idle is just a tad low the A/C compressor drag may be enough to drop the engine idle to low.

How quickly do you shift in to gear??? If you put it in gear as soon at the engine is at idle you could get a surging or stall. Wait 10 - 15 sec at idle befor putting trans in gear. Just a suggestion

I have brought this post back from deep within the archives to update you all on what i have found and what I think will fix it.
I tried removing the EZ box and that only made it worse, leaving me to believe that the extra fuel that the ez adds at idle is helping me right now, not hurting me.
Next I talled to Bill K. about the problem and he instructed me on how to check the TPS voltage at the PCM. I checked it and it is . 4 v at idle, acording to the shop manual and others this voltage should be . 6-. 7 volts. I disconnected the neg terminals on the batts for a few minutes and and then restarted the truck and remeasured the voltage, still . 4 volts.

Now I am off to the dealer to see if I can get them to reflash the ECM/PCM with TSB 18-15-00, which is for hard starts when hot and low power with winter fuel. I will report back when this is done...

I am now debating about removing the EZ and PE to take it to the dealer... ... its not that much work, but it is a pain when it is snowing outside.

John, Let us know what happens at the dealer. I am very interested in following this to its end. Sorry it has happened, but your information will help us all should this show up again. Dave

JR2--does this happen if the PE is on or off and have you tried to adjust the setting on the EZ-lower it if it's on the highest setting--I remember talking to Stefan at DTT about this and I don't remember if it's the voltage thing you checked that has something to do with the idle rpm's, if it's not I think idle rpm's may be the problem--need to up the idle rpms if I remember correctly, I'll have to check the manual to see how or if this can be done--the flash may be your best bet though----chris

Drove by the dealer yesterday and went inside to see the service manager, he was not around (friday at 3:30 pm) so I just left. I did not want to deal with one of the ticket writers at this point. I will try again on Monday. I am still trying to decide if I take the EZ and PE off or just leave them on and live with the consequences.

Jim,

The vb does not control engine idle, ecm controls your engine idle based on inputs from the tps & crank position sensor.

A vb's function is to shift gears, and maintain line pressure and cooler flow.
You may have an electrical short in the wiring harness, ie transmission filter is pinching a wire, and grounding the circuit.

If this were the case your symptoms would be 3rd gear starts with the tc clutch applied which would cause your truck to stall.

If your tps voltage was low, it can also cause your vehicle to stall when hot.
It is fairly easy to verify your tps voltage. The easiest way i have found to check the tps voltage is at the pcm.

The pcm is located on the passenger side of the vehicle firewall

There are 3 large wiring harnesses going into it,

The one closest to the drivers side, there is an orange wire with a dark blue stripe.

With the key off, locate the wire which is pin # 23,

If you disconnect the plug and look at the front of the plug you will see the pin numbers and find the orange wire with the dark blue stipe.

After you have located the correct wire reconnect the plug,

Key on, engine off, check your voltage,
it should read between . 6 -. 7 volts.

Dodge or Cummins are the only ones that can re-program the pcm or ecm to alter your programming.

Although tps replacement is a common replacement item for the 12 valve engines, so common some guys have a spare, it is NOT a common thing for the 24 valve.

Bill - I measured my with the truck running at idle and got . 4 volts. I guess I have to do it with the engine off. Now I have something to do tomorrow before I go to the dealer.

Today I took all the boxes off and un-disabled my waste gate. Truck still stalls so that eliminates all the boxes.

I have the same problem. I noticed it got worse after adjusting the bands. Could that cause the problem?

Troy,

I dont believe your band adjustment has anything to do with it. If they were set too tight you would actually feel a bindup kind of condition when the trans is changing gears.

Why not do a tps voltage reading and see where you end up?
Let me know .

John,

It is ok to take a reading with the engine running, i just get a little paranoid when guys are probing wires with the engine running. The reading should be the same with the engine on or off.

I dont believe the fueling boxes or the injectors are the cause, by adding injectors your engine idle should go up, but it doesnt because the ecm is programmed to mainitain the 750 rpm idle, the same is true with the va's and the edge boxes. I know sometimes they cause a rough idle but never high or low idle.
