A good friend of mine has a 1993 WD250 4x4 with 5 speed. The motor has started stalling momentarily while driving at various speeds. If he lets off of the throttle the motor will restart. He has replaced the fuel shut-off solenoid but no help. Also, his oil pressure idiot light and gauge have started fluctuating along with the temperature gauge. He has put a mechanical test gauge on the oil port and has good pressure. This all may or may not be related. His truck has 159K miles.

BTW, it has been bombed (don't have injector size or pump settings).

If anybody has any tips, he will be mighty grateful.

Sounds to me he has a air leak in the fuel system or a semi pluged fuel filter. I'm leaning more to air. Crack all fuel lines with engine running starting from the fuel filter to the injectors. Drain fuel from water seperater into clear glass jar also and look for sign of water. It wouldn't hurt to change out fuel filter even if it was done recently due to possibility of contamanation from rust, dirt, sugar ( bad trick ) etc.

I would try cleaning and tightening the connectors to the fuel shutoff solenoid. My truck did the same thing after I put in a new solenoid. It was losing contact and cutting the engine momentarily.

Don't know about the gauges. My oil gauge reads all kinds of things, and it's disconnected! PO put in a mechanical gauge...

IGNITION SWITCH

Kevin,

I had the very same thing happen to me a while back. Engine would shut off and restart at various speeds. Of course, when it stalls, the immediate reaction is to let off of the throttle. In my case, the ignition switch was totally fried and was momentarily shorting the shutoff solenoid voltage supply, which caused the stalling. The switch finally met its maker and shorted completely, frying a couple of fuse links in the process. New switch, no more problems :D

Your saying all the gages are acting up. Do they do it at the same time the engine drops out? I'm thinking they are related. The computer feeds the gages info and the engine fuel pump power to keep it running. If more than one circuit is acting up then it is something major. Bad grounds, TPS problem, engine rpm sensor, and or a host of other items.

What has he checked so we do not duplicate our efforts here? Does he have a service manual and a digital volt meter?

The first thing I would check is the wire coming off the bottom of the pump on the small silver solenoid. I have seen ths wire terminal come loose from age. It will stay on the terminal. But it moves around a lot and losses contact.
