I have had an issue with my 02, it surges really bad and only at a certain rpm, between 1400-1600. It will surge so bad the tach even registers the surge it feels like driving on 4 egg shaped tires. Let off or step the throttle down it is gone. has done it for a while but seems to be getting worse. Did it with my stock so pump and still does it with My hrvp44.

What are your thought?

Possible Apps?

Never run BD155's myself, but the big injectors tend to have somewhat of a lope at idle, and aren't super smooth way down low. Edge/DD Stage 4's and 5's would do this, as would the earlier DD Super Mentals and Mega Mentals. If that's just a cruise, downshift - you're lugging it at that RPM.

Since it is an auto I would try cleaning the grounds and leave the battery negative terminals disconnected for about 30 minutes then when you put the cables back on the battery turn the key on do not start the truck then push the accelator to the floor slowly and return slowly. Turn the key off then restart the truck drive it and see if it has cured the problem. If so you probably have a hunting problem and if so you should visit this site and purchase the noise filter. Dodge Ram Cummins 24V Truck Converter Clutch Cycling Repair. this is the only thing that cured my problem for good.

thats my thought too. Noise filter fixed mine. I got the DTT version and it have worked flawlessly for 4 years. nice easy 5 minute install.

It is not lugging and it does it in 3rd gear and OD at that rpm.

It is not hunting it is in OD at a steady cruise at around 50-60 mph in OD.

If I lug it or have a trailer on behind it it doesn't do it. It only does it if it is empty and cruising steady at 1400-1600 rpm.

I agree with KLocklier..... it may not be lugging as you state... . BUT,with an aftermarket convertor locked-up at that rpm ,combined with the bigger sticks that cause a mild lope... . I would guess this to be the problem also. Bump the R's up a bit by downshifting and give it a try.

I am thinking the Injectors also. I ran the same setup with 90 hp BD injectors with no issues and it started the loping at idle when I went to the BD 155's but it was shortly after the switch is when it began to do the surging. addition of the HRVP44 and fluid damper and ditching the Smarty calmed the lopy idle but the mid rpm surge is super anoying still.

1400rpm IS lugging, period. These engines are designed to run 1800-3000rpm. Now seeing that you are in 3rd and OD, chances are it's locked up and what you're feeling is the difference is harmonics in the engine with all your mods, and the damper springs in the converter clutch hub are setup for the stock harmonics. This was quite common with stock trucks and an EZ back in the day.

^^^^^^^^^^^Not sure what world you are livin in. If I had a 10k trailer and was pulling it in OD at 1400 that would be lugging.

It does it at a no load situation as I posted above. once it is loaded or lugged it quits surging and runs perfectly. I have a fluid damper and an after market converter also. There is a big difference in harmonics and a surge that will actually cause the front of the pickup to almost start hopping and the tach to jump around 100-150rpms at that point.

Have you ever driven an old 2 stroke detroit diesel powered truck with an air throttle accross a washboard road? That is the best description I can give for it. ;)

Prolly the APPS...

Swap one from a buddy's truck with no symptoms and auto transmission into your truck and see if it goes away...

Or, just go ahead and order a new aftermarket APPS from timbo here on TDR 'cause you will need one sometime anyway...

Godspeed,
Trent

I still think the r's are too low with your current mods. HR pump,155 sticks and a tight lock-up after-market convertor all add up to me..... turn the engine to its new powerband!!You said yourself ... . loaded or unloaded, when you throttle it out of the surge ,it goes away!!!Nature of the beast;)

However,I can see a failing apps causing a similar symptom as well!!

That is what I am leaning towards and it would be one of Timbos APPS no question about it, along with a possible injector swap again in the future anyhow as It all started with the addition of the 155's.

Billvo,

Does it do this when sitting still and increasing to the 1400 - 1600 rpm range?

I notice with my truck I get a surge between 40 - 45 if I increase or decrease of throttle that makes it go away. My trans builder, same person I purchased all my bombs from, told me in advance that I would get some surging with this turbo + sticks @ slower speeds. Unlike your truck if I press OD off while it's doing this it stops.

If yours does its annoying little trick while sitting still then I think it may possibly be an injector nozzle that's dirty or hanging up for some reason. If you happen to be able to borrow an APPS that's known to be good and it still does this then I think I'd look at the sticks next - MHO.

Good luck and keep us posted.
