Anyone out there know what you need to do if possible to swap out the engine on my 1998 Dodge Diesel 2500 4X4 looking to put a 2005 Cummins in place of the original engine. Any help or Direction as to who to contact will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

One of the gentleman at our local NAPA (on mission) is quite familar with the Dodge especially those with the Cummings. You might to start with him. During the few conversations I have had, he has been quite knowledgeable and if he doesn't know the answer, he will tell you where to look. He is the one with ZZ Top type beard.

Hate to do this to you, but..... there is NO "G" in Cummins.

I don't know what your truck has its either the early 98 with the 12V or a latter one with the 24V either way I would'nt trade either of those for a late model common rail don't know what's wrong with yours but I would speend the money to fix it it would be a lot less headachs not saying the common rail does'nt run good just like the second gen engine better well thats my 2 cents ? why do you want to do this

Anyone done a gasser to diesel swap? This case would be an 01 2500 HO to 98 dually V10, both dodge of course. I assume that it would be fairly straightforward, if you can call an engine swap that, and if you drained the tank well enough could you keep it?

I think what he was asking is how hard it would be and if anyone had done it and if it would be possible, not should he or shouldnt he. He is not the only one that has thought about this swap, I personally have, and just might do it in the future. I like alot of things about the CRD engine, and if I found a low mileage CRD truck that was rolled or such for a really good price, I would be all over tackling this project. I mean, why not? Be alot easier than many of the other swaps people have done with other brands and gassers. If I could find a 3rd gen wrecked truck with all the goodies, a CRD, 6spd G56, and the newer t-case, I would buy it in a heart beat if it was cheap enough.

Give the guy some slack and some technical help, dont beat him down because he wanted to tackle something like this.

Sorry, not trying to be an ***, I just get irritated when I see people shoot other peoples ideas down because they think its retarded, to each thier own.

I believe that anything is possible when it comes to automotive work. Some paths to follow may be an article in diesel power http://www.dieselpowermag.com/features/dodge/0610dp_dodge_cummins_power_wagon/index.html

but this was 3rd gen to 3rd gen

another resource may be http://www.fordcummins.com/

I know it is a ford site, but they may be able to help with engine mounts, etc. , and also have blocks for sale, including newer ones.

Goodluck, and remember that no swap is easy or without headaches, and my personal preference would be the one you've got in there, hey if you take it out sell it to me, I've got a 53 :( and could use a spare

Give me a call @619 517 0527 I have a couple of people who might be able to help. I am in Escondido. There are quite a few people in our area with cummins and there are some good combinations. There is a guy on the TDR that lives in Vista with a cummins suburban I think it is a 24valve.

As to your question it should bolt up no problem. The exhaust charge air hoses and radiator hoses will be different but not too hard to fix.

Manual transmission will help a lot, otherwise that will have to be addressed if you want auto.

If you are 98 and not 98. 5 communication between ecm and pcm should be not too much problem and your dash might actually be made to work. If you are 98. 5 it will be more of a problem more $$$.

A full set of mechanical gauges might be in your future.

It would be good to also post this on the conversion thread.

I live in Redding,CA and we have a 96 Ram delivery truck that we were thinking of putting a Common Rail. Harvey at J&H performance told us that there is only like one wire that needs to be ran to make one work in an earlier truck. I would recommend calling there, their phone number is (530)245-0176.
