Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) engine temp sensor

Can anyone help out where to locate my water temp. sensor on my 98 12 valve? I know its supposed to be at the back of the head but it is not there on my engine. My gauge goes all the way hot right at start up and causes check engine light to come on. I'm hoping its the sending unit. Thanks

The 1998 12 valves run it in the head but not at the back, it is still on the drivers side but it is about in the middle its forward of the filter housing and back from the injection pump you have to really look its hidden pretty good.
