in comparison to a gasser, does the engine temp go up alot quicker when you really get on it? Whats considered okay for normal driving w/ no load

or towing?

First of all welcome to the TDR!

Second you should never need to worry about coolant temps with the CTD when running empty.

Compared to a gasser, the engine temps won't go up very fast when you get on it. Diesel engines are much more efficient and with the big radiator you probably won't even see a change in the temp. I have rarely experienced the fan engaging on my other two trucks. When they did, I was usually sitting at a light, 100* outside with the AC running. The fan would engage until I got up to about 20 mph and then it would go off.

The temp you need to concern yourself with is the exhaust temp... especially if you modify but not a bad idea for a stocker either.

If I get on a highway onramp with my coolant temperature at 189 and give it 100% throttle, by the end of the onramp I'm at 192 and if it's really hot I can get it to 196. This is a run of about 1/4 mile at full throttle.
