I've been shopping around for a chip for a while now. I've been going through the forums but it's difficult to find all of the information in one place. Can anyone who knows their stuff give a breakdown by chip maker and what they are known for being good and bad at. What about modules vs downloaders? Will I ever need to buy a new chip after this one, if so how often do you upgrade? Finally, why do most people buy these chips... is it for towing, racing or something else? Sorry, lot's of questions, I'm still new and would love to hear as many perspectives as possible. Thanks...

need more info. . truck year, etc. how much power you want, what you want to do. let us know then we will guide you.

Does that mean different chips are better for different engines? I have a 4. 7 L Magnum V8.

Ummmm, this is a Cummins diesel site, not a gas engine site. You can ask the question in the "Other Vehicle" forum and may get some info there, but this forum is for diesel products and accessories.

For gasser dodge trucks, you can try: http://www.hemitruckclub.com/they'll probably be a lot more knowledgeable os the 4. 7 & 5. 7 motors.

Sorry I should have explained, I have gas now but am planning on switching to diesel (otherwise I wouldn't post here). That's why I'm trying to get up to speed on what I should be looking for and am wondering if different chip makers are know for being better for different engines. I am looking at the 5. 9 L Cummins ISB Diesel I6 but not a done deal yet.

Smart guy! Go to your User Control Panel and fill in your signature.

Yes, there are a lot of chips/tuners/downloaders/programmers out there. To each his own, as they say.

I would keep searching, that's what I did and fell in love with the Smarty!

Check cumminsforum.com and look at the tech articles for the 3rd generation. There was a pretty comprehensive list of the manufacturers and how they achieve the performance boost.
