I had the cold engine warming re-program done in September, and YES it was covered under warranty (5 year,100K). At the same time I had the Breather Relocated (under warranty) under the TSB that fixes the oil loss problem when operating on steep slopes.

Both of these work great. I can not say enough positive things about my satisfaction with cold engine warming re-program.

And the breather is now where the engineers that designed this engine should have put it in the first place. :)

Happen to know the TSB for the brether relocation? And the cold weather reprogram? I've tried to get the high idle working following all the "criteria" but no dice so I may have to go that route also... .

Crankcase Breather Overflow

Date: March 11, 2002

Models: 1998-2002 (BR) Ram Truck

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 1998 - 2002 (BR) RAM TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH THE 24-VALVE CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINE BUILT AFTER MARCH 27, 1998 (ESN 56443872).

Symptom/Condition:

Owners of 1998 - 2002 (BR) Ram Trucks equipped with the 24-valve Cummins diesel engine may experience engine oil overflow from the front crankcase breather when the vehicle is operated off-road on an extreme downhill grade (37. 5% or 22° slope/grade). Operation of this type for extended periods of time can cause enough engine oil depletion to damage the engine. A kit containing all components necessary to eliminate the oil overflow has been made available. If the condition exists, perform the repair.

sherndon, did you notice a change in mileage and/or power levels? I have seen where a lot of people on this site, often loose power and/or mileage after having the electronics worked on. Klaus

No Loss in Power and No Decrease in MPG

No problems with any aspect of the reprogram or breather fix.

Still have the same great power and MPG as I did prior to these fixes.

Oo.

Has the engine "ramped up" in RPM like it is supposed to when cold? Has it cut three cylinders like it is supposed to when it is cold?

Yes

Ramps up from 800rpm to 1200rpm. 3 cylinder shut off has not happend yet. In order for the 3 cylinders to shut down the temp must be 15 deg F or lower. I'll post it when the temp drops and the cylinders shut down.

Sherndon,

How was it justified for the dealer to do the "cold weather" programming under warranty? I would like to get mine done and wondered if you had to tell them anything special?

Thanks,

Bob

I was told by my dealer that the cold weather TSB would be covered under warranty if I experienced poor idle when cold.

I have had it ramp up and shut down 3 cylinders. It seems to happen a little colder than advertised.

I had the warmup update done to mine. Ramps up to 1200 ok. Clatters like h-ll when three cyl. shut down. Don't know if thats normal or not, but seems to run alright afterwords. Took the dealer mech. all of about 3 minutes to install. As far as mileage I only make about 10 mpg, but never made any better before. Dissapointed??? You bet :( I need to find someone who loves to tinker with these beasts, that wouldn't cost me an arm & leg to help me with that aspect. I like the otherwise aspects of the machine, power, looks, comfort, etc.

I've been looking forward to have this put on my truck. I guess I will pull the EZ and turnbuckle off next week and have them take care of the program and the recall I got for the power distribution box wire. This way I might not have to worry about whether they are going to charge me or not since it will already be there.
