Just for a comparison, the weight of the 16 cylinder Diesel in a 2000 EMD SD60M Locomotive is 39,600 lbs dry. The turbocharger weighs 2,014 lbs. Once you add the 436 gallons of oil, it will be alot heavier. I think adapting one to fit in the Ram is unlikeley.

Would that locomotive be like one that runs through northern kansas?
I'd like to have one of those connecting rods and a piston in the shop to sit on. #ad

That type of Locomotive is used by every major Railroad in the US. Union Pacific, CSX, BNSF, KCS, NS, etc. A Connecting rod and piston would be a little too big for a stool. Each Cylinder in that engine is 710 Cubic Inches. It has a 16:1 compression ratio. At 904 RPM it puts out 3,840 HP and It uses 187 gallons an hour at that RPM.

Hey EMDDIESEL- isn't Kansas deep into GE
FDL-16 territory?? #ad

Just kiddin'. #ad

Hey EMD, I'll bet the pistons are perfect as stools, I have one from an ALCo 539 sitting in my living room, makes a great seat.

I don't want a rod and piston ... ... . just six injectors #ad

Seriously, it is amazing what those diesels can do. I have worked on a lot of heavy equipment and some tugs on the mississippi. The power of those diesels never ceases to amaze me.

If anyone's interested, I've got a fork & blade from a lowly EMD 16-645 E2. Sorry, no pistons though. I would assume that shipping them anywhere would be considerable...

EMD,i have always been amazed by how big the loco engines are one we were in out truck and the train was parked right next to us at stop lights and it was crossing the street, the sound of the engine, we could feel in our truck rather than hear and it was towering compared to out Ram,how many cylinders the engine has and who makes them?
if i remember right these engines are in a V configuration and they are 2 stroke?
please correct me if i am wrong but would love to know more about those engines.
thanks
bob

99% of all locomotives used by US railraods are made by either General Electric or EMD (which is owned by general motors). Ge's have always been 4 cycle engines and untill just recently, EMD's have always been 2 cycle. GE uses 16 cylinder engines in there locomotives. EMD uses 16 cylinders in most of theres, but some have 20 Cylinders and the small yard engines have 12 Cylinders. Older units had "Roots" style blowers. Newer engines use Turbochargers which are gear driven up till around 700rpm then the freewheel off the exhuast. EMD's have a max rpm of about 904. EMD's newest engine is a 4 cycle, twin turbo 16 cylinder engine that puts out 6,240 HP. EMD's are also used in tugboats and Oil Rigs. They also see use as municipal power generators. The blocks are fabricated steel, not cast as that would be a little hard due to the shear size of them. Most engines by both GE and EMD have mechanical fuel injection. Newer units are using EFI. Some commuter lines are using Cummins generators for passenger cars in Locomotives too. I was originally a Locomotive Mechanic. I am now an Engineer so i dont get as much time to play with nuts and bolts so to speak. If you have any other specific questions, email me, i dont want to bore anybody else with this, but i am always happy to discuss trains.

Hey EMD, There's no such thing as a boring train story or boat story. I grew up next to the RR tracks along the Monongahela River and they still make me happy when I see them. Best thing is my boy loves them too. #ad
