I have a friend and neighbor who has a 2006 3500 dually with a 5.9 cummins and the G56 manual transmission. He said that about once per month his engine will stall at a traffic light. He has about 75K miles. He takes the truck out of gear and his foot out of the clutch at a traffic light, like most of us with a manual. The truck is completely stock. He uses amsoil and pulls a 32' 5th wheel. He has had no other issues with the truck. Why would the engine stall?

I would guess it stalls before he has a chance to pull it out of gear, that the clutch is not fully releasing sometimes. Tell him to slide the seat forward a little more, maybe he is not getting a full clutch stroke every time:D

Thanks for the input JDoremire, MMeier and Nisaacs. My friend, Lloyd, says that there are no codes and that the stall happens when the light changes to green and he puts the transmission in gear and is letting the clutch out. It does restart very quick. I agree with JDoremire that it could be the lift pump. How would one test the lift pump?

In-tank pump with 75k isn't usually worth even considering, they are robust and last a long time. If it was LP it would die accelerating not leaving the line only infrequently. A fuel pressure gauge at the CP-3 is the easiest way to monitor.

There are a lot of things it could, driver error a large part of it. He might just be putting in the wrong gear and not know it. That will have a DMF so it is possible the DMF is starting to fail and causing a bind. Possible the crank and cam sensor are borderline.

If he doesn't work it hard or drive it hard could be just fuel system getting gummed up. It is also entirely possible he has an electrical glitch that is just showing periodically in the right circumstances. It is a an earl CAN truck so all bets are off.

When the truck is idling, does it have an occasional stumble and then it will finally stumble and die? My 04 automatic was doing that as well as sometimes stumbling when starting off from a dead stop. At any speed, it ran great.

I fixed mine by replacing the Fuel Control Actuator (FCA) on the back of the CP3. I think the part cost me $100 - $150 and was relatively easily replaced. I say "relatively" because you need really long arms to reach it.

Question, has it done it since new? My C&C has always done it, and I learned to feather the throttle to prevent it. The test drive with another G56 C&C stalled on me as well, so I have always contributed it to the G56. However now that I have EFILive tuning, that went away, thankfully.

I have had bad (unpredictable engagement causing a stall) clutches due to a missing dowel pin tearing them up. It would also slip in 6th. It's very hard to stall the engine as it has the auto idle. IMO you would know you did it from the clutch because it's fairly violent when it grabs and stalls. I have stepped off the clutch quick in reverse while parked relearning I had a MT: a stall isn't guaranteed as the sudden motion and engine continuing to run reminded me one has to shut off the engine before stepping off the clutch when parking to avoid unnecessary excitement. Regardless the unpredictable clutch that stalled me had hotspots that you could hang a fingernail on and unloaded I start in 2nd that will stall the engine when dumping the clutch.

Pawpaw is referring to the FCA, fuel control actuator, on the back of the CP3.

RVTRKN, you may be onto somthing with the G56. What is a EFILive tuning? Lloyd said that it wasn't doing since new.

george

EFILive is for 2006 thru 2014 ECM's where you down load a different tune to the ECM from Dodges stock tune. If your under warranty it will void your warranty. It's not an addition to the ECM, it actually changes the tune within the ECM. Here is a link to a tuner that was recommended to me by TDR member AH64ID http://atptrucks.com/blog/efi-live-faqs/ EFILive is a windows based tune that is from New Zealand and is for GM vehicles, but now can be used for Dodge Cummins engines. http://www.efilive.com With the CSP5 switch, you can change 5 different tunes on the fly, and it's an instantaneous change, so you must be carefull when you switch your tune on the fly. You must hire a tuner to tune your EFILive or you can DIY, if you want to try it, but unless you have intimate knowledge of tuning, I don't recommend it. Also EGT & Boost gauges are highly recommended.
