Like to hear you say that about fifty years from now when coolest it gets in Texas at night is 120° and the Gulf of Mexico is where Dallas used to be. Then everybody will be gripeing about how come it took so long for the environmentalists to warn us about holes in the ozone and global warming.

You think so..... Come on up to Alaska and see for yourself..... its mid February and there is no snow. Its freakin 45 degrees and raining when it should be -10 and we should be up to our ears is snow.

EL Nino sucks... ...

The Earth like everything else goes through natural cycles, remember reading about the last Ice Age? It had to warm up to end the Ice Age. I have seen no compelling evidence to lead me to believe that there is such a thing as 'Global Warming' CAUSED by man. I wonder if the huge amounts of CO2 and Freon (specifically the equivalent of R-12) released by volcanos affect the environment? I wonder how much difference switching the process of attaching the foam to the main fuel tank on the Columbia did to help the environment? It certainly was worth the risk. Perhaps it will be 45F cooler in Texas next summer because of the switch. Perhaps pigs will fly. I believe the temperature swings are just normal cycles. I wonder if it is coincidence that DuPont's patent on the formula for R-12 expired THE SAME DAY as the first press release about R-12 killing the ozone layer, and a new 'ozone safe' refrigerant was available (at a higher cost). Anyone remember how many (in millions) of metric tons of dichlorodifluoromethane (think R-12) were released by Mount St Helens? Human production was a drop in the bucket. Perhaps my statement was a little harsh, perhaps not. Perhaps lowering vehicle emissions 5% and increasing fuel consumption 10% to do it is a good idea. Look around you, we have sand and sea shells here on hill tops, ocean levels ( Global Temperature and Polar Ice Caps too) vary over time. Anyone who fancies himself as 'green' and then bombs his CTD fuel system may want to take a good look in the mirror. IMO it's time to start spraying with OC 'dudes' who run up and spray paint your fur coat, severe penalties (remember I'm from Texas) for the Earth First! radicals who break in to research places and release test animals. ( I wonder if they would refuse cancer treatment that was first tested on animals ) Or who weaken chair lift poles because vehicle emissions damage the snow bunny. Wake up, they wont be happy till we are sitting in the dark, shivering, walking everywhere we go and eating leaves and grass.

What Tejas Said!!

Think about this: When global temperature goes up with ANY significance, not only will the ice caps melt a little, but there will be FAR more water vapor in the air, since warmer air can hold more moisture than cold air. More water vapor means more clouds. That means less sun getting through to Earth to heat it up. Thus, the Earth cools off.

The beauty of the planet that God made for us is that it is self-correcting for temperature. For some wacko to totally change my life and infringe upon my freedoms because he has read some JUNK SCIENCE and arrogantly believes he knows better than me TICKS ME OFF.

Exactly HOW LONG have they been tracking global temperature? 25 years? 50 years? 100 years? Even if they have been doing it 100 years, how accurate were those measurements? Heck, they hadn't even invented pneumatic tires 100 years ago, so don't tell me that temperature measurements were accurate to a fraction of a degree.

This "Global Warming" BS is ridiculous. Anyone who believes it should also believe that they can kill a whale in the ocean by peeing on the beach.

right on Tejas Deezul. Maybe the abnormal temperatures and weather patterns that we are seeing is the earths way of ridding itself of a parasitic virus (Man-kind).

I wrote a thesis on UV radiation and its effects on extinction (paleozoic era extinctions) and I also dove into some global warming issues with ozone depletion mixed in. I spent 4 months working on it and I don't want to know how many hours. From all the info i gather and the 100 pages i wrote on it, i discounted almost all the cheesy greenie cop out suggestions that we have caused global warming.

I'll leave it at that, I researched it, I know the truth and i read thousands of texts to leave it in my mind that these green peace tree hugging fools are nothing more than uneducated radical environmentalist TERRORISTS who want nothing other than to change our way of life based upon gross assumptions about the world. How about that for a run on sentence! Anyways, that global warming crap really gets my goat, get the facts and quit listening to Al Gore.

This is what I was referring to:

"Immediately after the Columbia rolled to a stop, the inspection crews began the process of the post flight inspection. As soon as the orbiter was approached, light spots in the tiles were observed indicating that there had been significant damage to the tiles. The tiles do a fantastic job of repelling heat, however they are very fragile and susceptible to impact damage. Damage numbering up to forty tiles is considered normal on each mission due to ice dropping off of the external tank (ET)"

"The pattern of hits did not follow aerodynamic expectations, and the number, size and severity of hits were abnormal. Three hundred and eight hits were counted during the inspection, one-hundred and thirty two (132) were greater than one inch. Some of the hits measured fifteen (15) inches long with depths measuring up to one and one-half (1 1/2) inches. Considering that the depth of the tile is two (2) inches, a 75% penetration depth had been reached. Over one hundred (100) tiles have been removed from the Columbia because they were irreparable. "

"During the STS-87 mission, there was a change made on the external tank. Because of NASA's goal to use environmentally friendly products, a new method of "foaming" the external tank had been used for this mission and the STS-86 mission. It is suspected that large amounts of foam separated from the external tank and impacted the orbiter. This caused significant damage to the protective tiles of the orbiter. Foam cause damage to a ceramic tile?! That seems unlikely, however when that foam is combined with a flight velocity between speeds of MACH two to MACH four, it becomes a projectile with incredible damage potential. "

This is why I am PO'd at the 'green' movement, was it worth it?

How true: "You can lead a man to knowledge, but you can't make him think. " ( from another TDR member)

Not wishing to start a religious debate, but since the early days of this planet, a “higher authority” has always had their hand on the big “reset” button for this planet. Be it an ice age, interstellar collision, tectonic movements, too many dinosaurs farted at the same time, or ignorance, a species existence in the grand scheme of things on this rock swinging around a giant nuclear explosion, is short. The current inhabitants are the first ones here that have found a way to shorten it drastically, but not by consumption. They are also the first ones that can control it to some extent. Nature will take care of the little things like ozone and pollution. All they have to do is survive the solution. Even radiation eventually goes away.

DISCLAIMER: I am not affiliated with any organizations or movements. My church is the open road, and my confessor is the wind. I am just a guy trying to survive. I don’t litter, dump my oil in the back yard, or avoid meat, because it’s a living thing. I do hope that we come up with a better source of energy, and pray to the powers that be that our nations governments would stop playing GOD, for the sake of the golden rule…MONEY.

Hey Tejas, another NewsMax Junkie!!

I personnally get all my news from either Newsmax or Worldnetdaily. (once in a while Fox News Channel)

Mainstream media is out to instruct, not inform, IMHO.

The greenies keep spewing about how polluted the planet is now and how we need to go back to the way things used to be.

During the early days of the industrial revolution, the street lights in Chicago burned 24hrs a day because it was dark. Cause: burning coal.

Something like 15000 dead horses were picked up off of the streets of NY City every year. That would be lovely!

There is a good thread going on the Free Republic with former shuttle guys analyzing the breakup. Somewhere in the 1200+ replies they mention that on one flight, I think it was STS41, they lost tiles and the plasma burned 2/3 of the way through a 3" diameter shaft on the elevon.

There is no doubt that natural forces play the larger part in warming, there is also no doubt that man made pollutants contribute also.

Difference is there is nothing we can do about the natural causes, sort of like saying that since it's raining there's no reason to squirt water on your house when it's on fire.

BTW, I like global warming, 50° February in Montana with no snow is great, I just wouldn't want to live any further south or near an ocean.

rhickman - finally, a voice of true educated sanity on this subject. It has long been a documented, proven fact that what the extremist left wing environmental types call Global Warming is in no way created by humans, but rather is a natural, repeating cycle that the earth has been going through for countless millions, if not billions of years.

All that research and I ended up switching back to computer science major. Oh well, it was cool. Now I'm just a techy nerd again not a rock digger.

I wonder how many of the lost astronauts would have considered themselves "greenies" if you think about love of this planet that we all share, it would probably been all of them. i'm not a greenie, or a tree hugger, but let's concentrate on why these folks were up there in the first place, the betterment of man and planet. Like JFK said before most of y'all were born. . We all share one thing... just my 2c's worth

First of all...

Man DOES control the environment, we just didn't all read the manual, were driving it like we stole it, what a blast!
