EPA and turbo back exhaust systems

Im not sure if this is the correct place to post this. Are Turbo back exhaust systems legal in the U. S if the Cat is removed? If they are not legal will putting " off road use only" or "compition use only" on the customers bill protect me if there was ever a problem?

Technically, modifying any part of the emissions system is illegal, as far as I know. Now, most exhaust companies sell "50-state legal" systems that (apparently) have been certified to not effect the emissions system. However, if you remove the cat, then it most certainly is illegal, since you have defeated a federally-mandated emissions control system.

I don't know how you, as a shop, could protect yourself. Only a lawyer would know something like that.

that statement on a bill of sale saying for off road use only will only save your butt if you have your customer trailer their ride from your shop, or you provide the parts to the customer to swap out them self. . "off road" mod parts are not for use on road going vehicles. if you modify it, and allow them to drive it off your off road location onto public roads, your balls in the sling on that one i am pretty sure

I finially talked by boss into selling performance parts. He was on board untill the converter came up. Then he abandon ship. Im trying to find the loop hole that keeps all these shops safe. How can all these performance shops alter everything and it be o. k?

So far I don't think the EPA has been doing much enforcing of their rules, my guess is that any of the chips or injectors on the market are going to cause the same problem and I've never heard of anybody getting in trouble for it. Would you just be selling the parts or would you also be installing them? I don't see how you could be held responsible for parts that you sold a customer but installing them might be a little different.

If a shop removes a cat on any street vehicle it is a $25000. 00 federal fine. In Texas we have vehicle inspections yearly, they are supposed to check for emmissions equipment and deny/report you if it is altered. I had a run-in with one of these 6th grade edjumication idiots they have running these tests trying to deny my truck for no cat, took 30 minutes of arguing it did not come with one before somebody else told him to pass it!

we currenty sell just sell the parts but would like to start installing them. We have annual inspections too and everything is supposed to be there. Does anybody sell an after market 4" performance converter?

I have seen 4" high flow converters, but they are not EPA approved. You can install an exhaust on a 2nd gen as long as it is not a California truck, those were the only ones with cats. 3rd gen all have cats.

Anyone have a list or know where to find the list of trucks that did and didn't come with cats. BTowler says non cali 2nd gens didn't have cats. I have a friend who has a 94 with a cat (I know cause I saw it in his bed this last week!). Reason I ask is that I just moved to an area that I hear is pretty tough on modded trucks. I run 4" straight from the turbo.

I'm runnin a 4" turbo back. The shop cut the cat out and said it was legal. We don't have to smog check diesels in CA. However the kind gentleman from the highway patrol informed me that what i had done was illegal. I'm going with the law on this one so i don't know what to tell the other CA guys. If you're runnin stacks you can always play the "commercial use" card but removing the cat is against the law if the officer wants to cite you for it which he said was rare. That's just CA, can't speak for other states

Pilot, was it a cat or a resonator? There is a small resonator before the muffler that looks like it could be a cat.

BTowler, I guess it could be. It was egg shaped, not your typical long looking cat.

The 94-98 12 valve trucks have a cat. I cut one open the other day looked like a cat anyway. It had a big honeycome in it. Im not not sure what the 98. 5-02's have looks like a small muffler.

The 2nd Gen 12vers had a cat, and the 2nd Gen 24's had a resinator. My truck came with a Jannetty's 4" on it, with the cat integrated into it. A Sawzall, 2 band clamps, and a piece of 4" pipe got rid of the cat and made it so I could slip it back in whenever I had to pass emissions.

As it was explained to me, there is no such thing as an EPA or CARB approved high-flow aftermarket cat. Now, if you want to try and fool some idiot that is running the inspection station, you might just get away with it if it looks somewhat stock.

My '04 HO had no cat or resonator on it. Just a pipe and muffler.

yep. . no cat on the 03/04 HO engines, as they were not 50 states emissions engines. . i just on friday had an emissions test done on my truck. . passed with flying colors. . it actually is kinda funny looking at the test report. . every item on the test is listed N/A... :-laf
