Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Eratic Spedo and Truck Downshifting...

Well I will try the post here... ... . I didn't seem to get any resoponses in the other forum..... My buddy just called and said his 98. 5 3500 CTD is acting up. He is at a gas station kind of stuck for now. Anyway, the problem is his spedo bacame eratic and then finally died if I remember correctly, then a little bit later the truck started downshifting till it got to second gear where it stayed and cruising about 20 mph. I stopped and let it sit for about 2 hours while looking for the problem, then started it again and drove the rest of the way home with no problem. Andy help would be appreciated... ... ... . If this is posted in the wrong forum, I apologize.

Sounds like you lost the out put speed sensor

Its the sensor on the rear of the trans,really easy to replace. Merv

I would also suggest that the battery posts/terminals be cleaned real good. use baking soda to neutralize the acids, coat everything with Noxid Grease before and after putting the cables back on the batteries.

Thanks guys... ... ... . after thinking about this I had the same thing happen on my truck yesars ago. But anyway I called hime this morning and teld him about the sensor... ... ... . John I will tell him about the battery posts... ... .
