my steering is really touchy. when i try to correct my steering from normal road wander ill end up jerking it to the other side of the road. i just busted a leaf spring up front driver side. so i figured while i had that apart i would replace upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends and the drag link. anything else i should replace while im at it. :(

I don't know about the touchy-ness, that is ussualy not a problem with our systems...

But just for [blank] and giggles, look at the joint on the steering shaft above the steering box while someone moves the steering wheel and see if there is any play. If there is, you'll want to get a borgesson or flaming river shaft.

is your truck 2wd or 4 wd, if 2wd and you have springs giving you lift over stock your alignment may be way off, I put a longflatbed on a 2 wd truck which raised the front 2" or so and it drove straight perfectly but dove to the right or left with the slightest provokation, getting it aligned cured it... the guy who did it said the toe in was off his scale...

My 91 4x4 did this and it was due to the front axle U-joints failing. Even if these U-joints appear to turn by hand with a long screw driver they will may still be binding up while the suspension and steering are working during the course of normal driving - this will cause the jerkiness. Go with greasable u-joints for this application.

Check:

Steering box mounting plate and the frame where it mounts for cracks or flex.

Output shaft on the steering box

Upper kingpin bushings

Spring bushings

Re-tourque the axel U-bolts

Leafspring center bolt
