Ok, I have 2006 dodge 2500 5. 9. The other day I went and filled up at a farm tank and after about 80 miles of the truck running fine, it started to run very strange. It won't start without a slight shot of ether. When started It seems to idle ok but a little erratic and if you give it a little gas, seems to lose control and run up to about 2500 rpm and miss with a tapping noise. It then gets higher and higher until you are forced to shut it off. I drained and replaced the fuel and filter and I think I got a bunch of water in there. There was a high percentage drained out of the fuel filter but no WIF light.

The next day I put a scan tool on there and discovered that If I shut down cylinder #4 the tapping goes away and it seems to be able to control itself and come back down to idle. I have access to another injection pump, and I am looking at pulling all the injectors and having them tested for damage. Each injector when shut off makes the truck act a little different, so I am thinking they may all be damaged to some degree.

How likely is it that I messed up the injection high pressure pump? What goes first in the case of water? injectors or pump?

I put the spare pump on there and am looking at the same running characteristics from the truck with a good pump. Is there anything else I need to replace or check in the case of water? My rail pressure sensor appears to be working so far.

Thanks for any help, this is looking to be a costly lesson and I want to minimize the blow.

It seems that no. 4 injector is bad, it is either sticking open (knock and fuel in oil) or because water contamination/dirt it mite not be opening.

Engine running away sounds like electronic problem.

Ok, I shipped all the injectors north to be tested and apparently they are all blown. The report says that return flow out of each injector is out of control, especially #4. I am looking at 6 new at a pretty decent price of 240 a pop.

Is there any possibility of lower end damage from this disaster? The injection pump shop just told me that unless I want to preemptively pull the head and inspect after a compression test, they would install the injectors and see how it runs.

What do you think?

One other issue, when I pulled the injectors I just sort of removed things without any directions. Everything is fine but I mistakenly unscrewed the magnetic adjustment deals on the exhaust rockers a little on three cylinders before I realized my mistake. The one that controls adjustment between the rocker and lifters. How do I readjust them? they may be out of spec now, I re-tightened them down but the set screw may have moved.

Thanks

Don't know about lower end or magnetic things on the lifters, common rails aren't my thing but I'm trying to learn about them. .

I would change Oil and Oil Filter! Just in case water or fuel got into oil.

good call, oil and filter after they are in. New injectors coming by friday, pump shop gave me a price on 7. 3 ford injectors originally. Whoops. Actual price is 340 a pop for cummins with a deal for all 6. Still pretty good.

Found the spec for exhaust valve lash, which is what I muddled removing the injectors.

Max- 0. 863mm (0. 034in) Min- 0. 533mm (0. 021in)

Hopefully the truck will be running friday.

Heres another question, how do I find TDC on an 06? I am trying to adjust the exhaust valves and cant find a mark. I figure its something simple cause its not really mentioned anywhere, I must just be missing it.

Ok, found TDC mark, adjusted the exhaust valves, turned the engine using the gear nut for the injection pump and got her running. Changed the oil and then put about 160 miles on the truck last night and I am prepared to say that she is back to normal.

The only issue is that I cant get my superchip to load back on the ECM. It says that it needs a update and flashes a code it requires. I assume this has to do with the non original injection pump. any ideas?

Total cost for this disaster was 350 for an injection pump, a final price of 350 for each injector. the grand total was 2450 not counting my time. Truck was down for a week. Guess they dont run on water all that well.
